Lesbian Professor Responds To Controversy Surrounding Marquette Univ Job Offer, Take Back

MILWAUKEE -- Dr. Jodi O'Brien, a lesbian professor at Seattle University, is responding to the controversy surrounding a job offer at Marquette University.

Marquette offered O'Brien the job as dean of the college of Arts and Sciences. However, University President Father Robert Wild rescinded the offer.

Students and staff claim Fr. Wild took back the offer after two of O'Brien's published works surfaced, one about lesbian sexuality in the first person, another about same-sex marriage.

On Tuesday, Dr. O'Brien released this statement:

"For the past 15 years, Jesuit values have been at the center of my evolution as a teacher and scholar at Seattle University, which treasures its Jesuit Catholic mission. Because Marquette is recognized as one of the nation's top Jesuit universities, I was deeply honored earlier this year when I was offered the opportunity to help advance its Jesuit mission as Dean of Arts and Sciences. I said in my initial application letter that I believe Jesuit colleges and universities are uniquely positioned to provide an educational experience that fully prepares students for ethical leadership in our complex times. I believe in the Jesuit mission even more today as a result of the outpouring of support I've received from Marquette students and faculty. My hope is that members of the Marquette community will continue listening to each other, caring for one another, and striving for excellence consistent with the best Jesuit tradition."

I agree. You cannot have the words Homosexuality and Values in the same sentence. It is an OXYMORON. It’s like saying Drug Addiction and Values go together.

the links are broken. However, at least the administration at this school stand behind their tradition and beliefs. Hopefully, it will not cave into to the liberal faculty and student pressure. Come to think of it, the teachers who protest against the foundations of Marquette’s vision ought to look for work elsewhere. Goodness knows what they are teaching the students.

I am guessing that has something to do with Seattle’s Super Lib ex-Archibishop Hunthausen (so far left Pope JPII had to reassign some of his duties to other “babysitter” bishops)

However, at least the administration at this school stand behind their tradition and beliefs.

Only when forced to by the local Bishop. Marquette's beliefs and tradition are frequently in opposition to the Church. That's why a heretic like Daniel Maguire is allowed to teach theology there.

I am hoping that more institutions whose foundations lay in Christian precepts will find their original voice. In this instance, Marquette should actively take a stand and not renew the contracts of any teacher who opposes Catholic doctrine unless they need a resident Protestant there to present an opposing view within the family so to speak. But other than that a Catholic University should espouse Catholic precepts which do not include sanctioning openly homosexual teachers influencing young people. This should also be the case of the numerous universities founded by Protestants. The only thing I can imagine that may be difficult is that so much depends today on government grants and loans to subsidize tuition, and if the government insists on non discriminatory policy for all colleges well then there is little that a college can do. However, there are schools like Patrick Henry College in Va. that do not access government loans etc for the specific reason that they do not want the government telling them what they can and cannot teach and who exactly they can hire or not hire.

Marquette's beliefs and tradition are frequently in opposition to the Church.

But in fairness, Marquette has an excellent NFP program and their study of the teaching of the Church is wonderful.
