Today's Awkward Photo-Op: Kagan Admires Senator's 'Gorgeous' Rifle

One of the most curious and awkward traditions of Capitol Hill is the practice of shepherding a Supreme Court nominee to the offices of senators who will eventually vote on his or her confirmation. The visits almost always produce some discomfiting photo-ops, and Elena Kagan's gantlet has been no exception.

On Wednesday, for instance, Kagan met with Senate Judiciary Committee veteran Orrin Hatch (R-Utah). Their discussion opened by exchanging pleasantries. "It's a beautiful office," Kagan told Hatch, as they sat before dozens of photographers clamoring for the perfect shot. "Yeah, well, there's some nice stuff here," Hatch allowed.

And that's when it got weird. "You're going to get mad," Hatch said, motioning above the reporters, where a gun hung on the wall. "Man of the Year from the National Rifle Association," the senator explained. "It's a piece of art, really."

Kagan, an amused look on her face, nodded. "It's beautiful," she said, staring at the gun.

"It's a handmade flintlock, and it's beautiful," Hatch said.

"It's gorgeous," Kagan replied, as the press was hustled out of the room. One reason the gun exchange came off as a bit forced is that memos released from Kagan's tenure as a Supreme Court clerk show her saying she was "not sympathetic" to the right-to-bear-arms argument of a prospective Supreme Court plaintiff. (The appellant argued that his constitutional right was violated when he was convicted for carrying an unlicensed firearm in violation of the District of Columbia gun ban.)

Perhaps she’d be more satisfied with a right to “keep and mount arms, as long as they can’t actually be fired.”

Hatch is a tool. Note the apologetic “It’s a piece of art, really”.

Sounds like Hatch intentionally tried to put her on the spot in front of the cameras...actually kinda funny.

I’m surprised she didn’t compare it with her baseball bat.

You're missing the point; to her it is gorgeous. It is exactly the type of arm she believes is protected by the 2nd Amendment.

I'm certain she would be glad to have us all replace our semi-autos and bolt actions with a nice "gorgeous" flintlock.

In the Massachusetts legislature, I'm told, the old revolutionary flintlocks have trigger locks looped through them.

I was not there to see the body language, but just possibly she found it beautiful as she said.

America may run out of oil, it may run of money, it may even run out of food. But, as long as we have politicians and lawyers we’ll never run out of stupidity.

Damn RINO HAtch - she has no right to get mad.

Hatch was being defensive about supporting gun rights. That's dead wrong. It's the law of the land - and both Hatch and Kagean better get used to it.

Hatch's comment may have put the idea in her head that overturning the 2nd might be popular. Stupid retard.

Get rid of him in Nov....please. Or do we have to wait until 2012. ?

If it was presented to Hatch at a NRA convention, it is almost certainly a flintlock longrifle made by Cecil Brooks. Mr. Brooks dedicated his long life to making these guns by traditional methods, and they are indeed, gorgeous beyond measure.

We are one vote away from every privately held gun to be taken away.

We are one vote away from the complete Stalinist eradication of every Christian symbol from public life.

We are one vote away from the insane notion that the Constitution guarantees full and complete health care, a home and a job to everyone who wants one.

We are one vote away from the forced governmental dismantling of the First Amendment, through every medium including the internet and the radio.

We are one vote away from the eradication of property rights.

We are one vote away from the takeover of private industry by the government.

We are one vote away from Big Brother - just one, and they keep pushing it.

Our sacred Bill of Rights will be gone. The power of the State will not be stopped.
