, bills and even a college acceptance letter from 2007 were among 20,000 letters found inside the garage of a Philadelphia postal carrier.
When the mailman missed several days of work in April, postal officials went to his Port Richmond home and found tubs and tubs of undelivered and unopened mail.
The postal worker, who has yet to be identified, worked out of the Bustleton station in Northeast Philadelphia. The neighborhood most impacted is located near Castor Avenue and Benton Street.
One of those affected was desperate to receive a $900 check in December 2007. The letter just arrived on Thursday.
"I got mail today from 2007. Paychecks, things like that that I needed. Stuff from the Social Security Administration, I.R.S.," resident Kevin Carpenter said.
Carpenter asked the worker he knew as "Dave the mailman" to be on the lookout for the check.
"I asked Dave and Dave said he hadn't seen it, but as soon as he got it, he would call me," Carpenter explained.
Some of mail found in the postal carrier's home dated back to 1997.
One of the letters that was undelivered was a 2007 acceptance letter from West Chester University. The recipient, who received the letter on Thursday, is now a senior in college.
Investigators have yet to question the mailman because they have not been able to locate him.
However, delaying mail and stealing mail are both federal offenses.

One day, about every three or four weeks, no mail gets delivered here for that day. My and my neighbor’s mailboxes are right next to one another, so I know it’s not just me not having any mail that day -— I check. So I wonder, does the mailman just take the day off or is the post office just not delivering mail on those days?

The supervisor and postmaster most assuredly knew that the mail carrier was lousy and needed to be fired. It's just that he was union protected and therefore untouchable.
I've been faced with a totally incompetent mail carrier before. The advice of the postmaster was to get a P.O. Box.
But he’ll still get his pension.. The ACLU will sue to ensure he does. A Federal Judge will uphold this carrier’s “civil rights”, blah blah blah..
Maybe Obammy’s birth certificate is in there somewhere. /s

The rest of his time, should be spent in a mail room sorting from sun up to sun down until his caning is done.
Geez....I mailed my grandson $25 in cash (to Philly) and he never received it.....maybe I’ll get it back.
I went 10 days without ANY mail, day 6 I mailed a letter to my self and it still hadn’t arrived at day 10. I called the postmaster and raised hell, MIRACLE of all MIRACLES the mail showed up the next day.
Postal workers ALL SUCK and are WORTHLESS. Monkess could do their jobs better and FASTER and cheaper.
I live on a dirt road. On the days the mail isn't delivered to us, it's easy to see if we were just bypassed, or there are no tracks. A couple of times in the almost five years we've been here, there have been no tracks to anyone's mailbox.
I've had the same letter carrier for almost 21 years. A few years back when my idiot grand son backed over the mail box in the dead of winter when I couldn't dig a new post hole, Mike, the mail man brought my mail to the door until I could get it replaced. Something he didn't have to do.
Incompetents and crooks can be found in any line of work.

this has happened before...one of our mailmen was dumping his deliveries in a deep ditch for months before they caught him....he was drinking on the job. he finally got caught when he backed into the ditch one day and had to call for help.
It happened around here a few years ago also - a new carrier could never finish his route on time, so he just started throwing the mail he couldn’t deliver into a dumpster.

In fact, reading this article reminded me of a letter carrier in a large city who was fired after being reported for tossing his mail sack in a dumpster. The guy claimed he felt the dumpster was a safer place for the mail than his Postal jeep--but this "defense" was so lame that even the union agreed his termination was justified, and he WAS fired!
In fact, it often happened that when a termination letter was issued, and the basis for the termination was justified and NOT in violation of any contractual provision, the union rep would make it quite clear that even if the employee filed a grievance, they would--and should--be fired!
It's just sad that in so many places today, "public servants" feel they have no obligation to "serve" anyone save their rude and lazy selves!

No, I’m not joking. There is a world of difference between poor performance and crime. The postal unions argue with postal managers over contractual issues, not over crime. What this letter carrier did is criminal and he can go to jail for it. He isn’t protected when he steals mail from the mail stream.
