Even as drunken student antics go, it was, by any stretch of the imagination, a disturbing scene. Surrounded by cheering rugby players, applauded by fellow members of the university netball team, 19-year-old Melissa Fontaine tipped back her head and giggled as fellow drinkers in the Students' Union bar pulled apart her eyelids and allowed them to pour a shot of vodka into her left eye.

'Vodka eyeballing', as it is known in student circles, is the latest drinking craze to sweep through Britain's universities.

Those who do it claim that it induces feelings of drunkenness at break-neck speeds, providing an instant high.

From what I heard, behind the eye is the last place alcohol leaves after a night of drinking. I remember watching a show where they were talking about sampling from behind the eye of a corpse because the person had drank themself to death. 0.63 I think was the BAC.

I wonder how this affects eyesight and if it can lead to blindness...... messing up a batch of corn liquor can cause blindness; what about continued vodka through the eye?

I’m less than a decade removed from my 21st, and I don’t remember antics like this ever. The “craziest” drinking stunts we did were beer bongs and body shots.

Vodka in the eye? GTFO! No thanks! And having recently started at AA, the thought of vodka in my body at all makes me cringe. I’m enjoying sobriety.

Believe it or not, some people do that - alcohol enemas through the colon is a powerful high. You can get more alcohol in faster than you can drink it. And the colon’s business is to absorb liguid.

However it can kill you, so it’s sort of stupid. There have been quite a few deaths. However, pouring alcohol in your eye seems just as dumb. It’s got to be drying and toxic.

Sorry to say it, but I was... or perhaps worse. We used to drop hits of windowpane acid (LSD) on our eyeball.

Yeah, I already know, so I don't really need anyone to tell me how dumb it was. But just the fact that I managed to survive some of those antics reinforces my belief that there is a God.

And He has a plan for me.
