David Cameron used the coalition talks with Nick Clegg as an excuse to ditch daft Tory policies he secretly wanted to get rid of all along - such as scrapping inheritance tax and getting rid of his pledge to rip up the Human Rights Act, it was claimed last night.
The leader of Mr Cleggs negotiating team, new Scottish Secretary Danny Alexander, said his Conservative counterparts, led by William Hague and George Osborne, produced a list of Mr Camerons manifesto pledges and invited the Lib Dems to strike them out.

You realize that most if not all of the conservatives in the UK (not just Tories, but anybody there who would be at home among Freepers) are monarchists? In the UK it's the far leftists who want a Socialist republic.
If this is true, Cameron is going to facing a back bench rebellion that could topple his Premiership. Probably not now, but eventually. Those manifesto commitments are taken seriously by the party rank and file.
