N. Korea to hold parliamentary meeting early next month
SEOUL, May 18 (Yonhap) -- North Korea will convene its parliament early next month, its state news agency said Tuesday, amid growing tensions with South Korea.
"The meeting of the Supreme People's Assembly will be held on June 7 in Pyongyang," the Korean Central News Agency (KCNA) said in a brief dispatch, monitored in Seoul.
The meeting comes just two months after the parliament convened in April. No specific reason for the June gathering was provided.
It also comes as tension escalates on the Korean Peninsula after a South Korean naval ship sank in late March when a mysterious explosion ripped it in two near the maritime border with the North. Forty-six sailors were killed.
Seoul officials have yet to openly accuse Pyongyang, but they widely suspect a torpedo attack by the North caused the sinking. Pyongyang has denied any involvement.
South Korea is set to announce the result of its probe this week concerning the Cheonan's sinking.
