In other words, supposedly State offered no opinion to the Chinese about whether Arizonas law actually does violate human rights but brought it up early and often as an example of how mature democracies debate sensitive issues like discrimination. Okay. (1) By Posners own account, the statute was introduced in the context of confessing our national sins so as to make the Chinese more forthcoming. That would seem to imply a certain
value judgment about the law, would it not? Which, of course, dovetails nicely with Posners own description of the statute just last week as part of a troubling trend in our society. Ive given up on expecting administration officials to actually read the law, but if youre going to badmouth it, own it.

Sarah Palin, 5-17-10
(I wonder who asked him to do this?)
[T]hose comments were taken out of context and the discussion of the law was meant to show the differences between how a free society handles human rights issues and the restrictive practices enforced in China, Posner tells The Cable in an exclusive interview.
The broader context in which this was raised was to discuss the political openness of this society and the value of an open debate, Posner said. We never did get into the merits of the Arizona law. It was not in any way a comparison between that law and any specific law or practice in China.
I should have been clearer, what I was saying is that there is broader issue in [American] society about discrimination and we need constantly and always to be addressing that issue, he said
The only thing that was said [about Arizona’s law] was that the debate is about a law that some critics would say has the unintended consequence to discriminate against legal or illegal residents. We did not comment on the particulars of whether thats true or not, Posner explained.
The list, ping
Sarah Palin gets results.
Well here fella, don’t take my extended middle finger out of context either, okay?
This is what happens when you hire an anti-American to run America.
I remember when Rudy was running he campaigned saying “the era of anti-Americanism in the State Dept is over!”.
Oh how I wish.
That’s one of the things that really bothers me about folks like Rudy. They honestly can’t grasp what’s going on, and they give cover to the very folks who are dismantling our nation before our very eyes.
When I see a RINO, it’s not just their leanings that bother me, it’s their complete inability to see how they are playing into the end game against us.
RINO isn’t just a dirty four letter word. It’s a national death sentence.
IMHO this administration has the greatest frequency of having to reset the record with the phrase “what I meant to say...”.
I do not recall tolerance to Bush’s gaffes or lack of clarity.
I am really beginning to resent the multitudes of passes which is given to “THE ONE”.
It is truly alarming the level of amateur governing which we are presently witnessing.
Recently in the WSJ, they had an article about Chinese not being able to understand American humor. A Chinese-American comedian was explaining the problem. Part of it was that they are “face” people. They don’t make self-deprecating jokes and don’t laugh at them because that makes one lose face.
It is a western psychology approach to assume that confessing that we have problems will make someone else like us better and feel more comfortable talking to us.
Anybody who does diplomacy should be well-informed enough to know that other cultures don’t necessarily start dialogues that way. China will not feel more connected to us just because we have “issues” in our democracy. The State Department has embarrassed us again.
He needs to be fired. A lot of them do.
“I took myself out of context when I said that.”
No, in their minds they will say to themselves "I think we're dealing with incompetents and idiots here."
