Duluth teen gets 20 years for convenience store shooting

Steven Albert Cooper was sentenced today to 20 years in prison for shooting two Lincoln Park convenience store clerks in their backs as he robbed the store.

The sentencing, the result of a March 11 plea agreement, came over the objection of a probation officer who said it wasn’t strong enough to fit the crime.

John Serre, a probation officer with Arrowhead Regional Corrections, told St. Louis District Court Judge Mark Munger that because of the “heinous” nature of the crimes, Cooper, now 18, should serve consecutive instead of concurrent sentences, doubling his time in prison.

But Prosecutor Charles Schumacher defended the agreement, noting that Cooper had just turned 15 when the crimes were committed.

Travesties such as this are why I am for life sentences for such crimes, short life sentences of no more than 30 days.

Perp looks like something Buckwheat's mom might have given birth to if Mike Tyson had raped her....I mean, dated her.

We need to do what they do in Alaska- institute predator control. Silly me, what was I thinking, that's what the 2nd ammendment is for. Pretty soon, if you ain't carrying, you ain't livin'.

It's not a 'color' thing, it's a right or wrong thing and Americans are no longer allowed to make that judgment. Things like sanctioning Gay Marriage will only seal the deal: can't be judging people anymore, you just gotta accept it.

America can do away with things as old-fashioned as 'right' and 'truth' 'cause now we have, "Yes We Can, Yes We Can". Any guess as to how long this plays out before Mother Nature kicks our collective asses? Answer: Not very long. See, Mom doesn't do phonies very well. She extincts 'em when they don't follow her rules.

“Public defender Rebecca Shaw noted that two psychologists concluded that Cooper could have been rehabilitated if he had been kept in the juvenile system. “There is no question that Steven committed a violent act,” Shaw said. “But he is not a monster.””

Oh yes he is, Ms. Shaw! Cooper put three rounds into two men, not even giving them the chance to “just give up the money”. He had murder on his mind from the moment he walked into the store.

When he gets out, unfortunately, he should be made to live in a upper income, liberal town, as should all these scum. Let the limp wrist, liberal do gooders have them, instead of being half way housed amongst the poor and working class whom would prefer them shoved though a diesel woodchipper.

I've faced a few of these "kids" down, there doesn't seem to be anything behind their eyes, no inhibitions at all. You only stop them by being tougher and meaner than they are.

He will come out of prison, if he survives, a lot more dangerous than he is now.

“He will come out of prison, if he survives, a lot more dangerous than he is now.”

Yes, he probably will - but that is his choice! He went into prison a felon and he will probably come out a felon. There is not a lot that can be done about that.

The prison system today is NOT about rehabilitation, but about keeping them out of society. That does protect us.

Too bad he was not sentenced to a longer term...

The clerks were running when he back shot them, that isn't the way I ran a C-Store. I know you aren't supposed to profile but I would have been ready to draw as soon as I saw him. Some of the ex cops around here don't like my stance on this, but when my butt is near the crack I don't take chances.

I always figured they look for signs of weakness, I must have been correct, LOL

A friend of mine got held up on one of my off days, he let the POS get behind him. You don't do that, even if everything in the store goes to Hell. He was lucky, never saw the guys face so the POS didn't kill him.

Profiling is really a matter of instinct. Most of us would suspect that a problem exists without their explicit actions.

Anyone who shoots someone in the back should get double sentencing... The laws today really need updating.

Yes, seems like your friend did not do the correct profiling on his attackers. I really think that most of these folks could be identified just by their appearance and actions.

Never turn your back on these type of folks...

I guess that Arizona will just be out of luck...

Did you notice the last line of the story wherein this little psycho gets 1200+ days credit off his 20 year sentence. That means he’s out in 16.

He needs to be iced by his jailhouse buddies before he turns into a real Frankenstein and he won’t miss killing his targets next time.
