One reason I have heard that Blacks and Hispanics are overrepresented among support positions rather than combat positions is that usually there are two reasons young men (they are still mostly men) join the military; either economic or patriotic.

Patriotic enlistees usually want to serve in a ‘blood and bullets’ situation; and tend to gravitate towards combat positions.

Economic enlistees usually want to make a 20 year go of it and gravitate towards support positions.

Because of their over-representation among the poorer segments of US society, Blacks and Hispanics tend to be among those who join for economic reasons. And those who join for economic reasons, of whatever race, tend to gravitate towards support positions.
