“Air Force strikes in Gaza”

SNIPPET: “IDF retaliates for deadly Qassam attack: Air Force hits several Gaza targets, including metal foundry, smuggling tunnel; Vice PM Shalom says Israel to offer strong response to rocket attack that killed Thai worker Thursday”

SNIPPET: “IDF aircraft struck at least four targets in the Gaza Strip on Friday, a day after a rocket fired from the Palestinian enclave killed a Thai worker in Israel, Hamas security officials and witnesses said.”

SNIPPET: “Israel also sent a letter of complaint to United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon, who is due to visit Israel at the weekend, and to the UN Security Council.

A previously unknown group, Ansar al-Sunna, believed to share the hardline ideology of al-Qaeda, claimed responsibility for the rocket fire at Israel, as well as the al-Aqsa Martrys Brigades, a wing of the Fatah movement.

Earlier, Deputy Defense Minister Matan Vilnai said that Israel holds Hamas accountable for attacks originating in the Gaza Strip regardless of the group that commits them.”

Published: 05.20.10, 23:57 / Israel News

SNIPPET: “The relative calm along Israel’s border with Gaza was violated Thursday evening when a Qassam fired from the northern part of the Hamas-ruled territory landed in an open area within the limits of the Ashkelon Beach Regional Council. There were no reports of injury or damage.

The “Color Red” alert was activated shortly before the Qassam exploded.

A rocket landed in the same area about a week-and-a-half ago, but there were no injuries or damage in that attack either.”

A collapsed tunnel denies the Palis the PR value of showing death and destruction wreaked by the IAF. The “victims of Zionist agression” are buried under tons of sand, out of sight and off the Internet.

Hezbollah mobilises troops
The Straits Times ^ | 5/21/2010 | AFP
Posted on May 21, 2010 7:05:52 PM PDT by sonofstrangelove

Hezbollah mobilised thousands of militants in southern Lebanon on Friday in response to week-long Israeli defence exercises due to kick off on Sunday, an official from the Shiite militia group said.

‘The Hezbollah fighters have (been instructed) to be completely ready to confront Israeli manoeuvres on Sunday,’ Nabil Qaouk told AFP. ‘Thousands of our fighters will not go to the polls (for municipal elections on Sunday) and will be prepared from today’ for any eventuality, he added.

Israel and Hezbollah fought a month-long war in 2006 that destroyed much of southern Lebanon, largely a Hezbollah stronghold. Israel attacked Lebanon after Hezbollah guerrillas captured two soldiers in a cross-border raid.

Israel estimates that Hezbollah has since stockpiled more than 40,000 rockets, some of which could reach major Israeli population centers.

And last month, Israeli President Shimon Peres accused Syria of providing Scud missiles to Hezbollah, charges that Damascus has denied.

Dubbed ‘Turning Point 4,’ the defence exercises are designed to prepare emergency responses to rocket strikes on Israel, with sirens due to ring out across the country on Wednesday and Israelis head for shelters. Israel’s Deputy Defence Minister Matan Vilnai emphasised last week that the exercises had been planned long in advance, and had no bearing on the Jewish state’s present relations with its northern neighbours.

Hizbullah getting advanced Iran missiles from Syria ‘on regular basis’
Geostrategy Direct ^ | 5/21/2010 | Geostrategy Direct
Posted on May 21, 2010 8:53:15 PM PDT by sonofstrangelove

The Israeli intelligence community has determined that Hizbullah received a shipment of solid-fuel rockets from Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Officials said the solid-fuel rockets were said to have included the Fateh-110, with a range of more than 200 kilometers.

“Hizbullah in 2010 is very different to Hizbullah in 2006 in terms of military capability, which has advanced a great deal,” Brig. Gen. Yossi Baidatz, a senior Israeli military intelligence officer, said. “Hizbullah is now regarded by the Syrians as a component of their defense establishment.” On May 4, Baidatz, head of military intelligence’s research department, told the Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee that Hizbullah was acquiring advanced missiles and rockets through Syria. The brigadier said the Iran was sponsoring the weapons shipments to Hizbullah bases in Lebanon.

“Syria plays a significant role in the growing strength of Hizbullah’s rocket arsenal,” Baidatz said. “Weapons are sent to Hizbullah from Syria on a regular basis under the direction of the Syrian and Iranian regimes.”

Baidatz said Hizbullah has also received an extended-range version of the Scud-class missile. The officer did not identify the missile, although Western intelligence sources said this was the Scud C, with a range of 550 kilometers.

“The shipments of long-range missiles which have been reported recently are only the tip of the iceberg,” Baidatz said. “The long ranges of the missiles in the hands of Hizbullah enable them to place their launchers deep inside of Lebanon, and they cover ranges that are much longer than what we have seen in the past.”

Hizbullah has also received the Syrian-origin variant of Fateh-110. Officials identified this as the M-600 rocket, with an extended range of 300 kilometers.

“Hizbullah Sources: Israel Will be Bombarded with 15 Tons of Explosives a Day in Case of a War”

SNIPPET: “Sources informed in Hizbullah’s military branch revealed on Tuesday that that in case of a new war between the party and Israel, the latter will be targeted with a “different kind, quantity, and intensity of rockets” than the July 2006 war.

They said that the party has increased its rocket power, and Israel should be expected to be bombarded with 15 tons of explosives a day if it waged a war on Lebanon.

The sources told the Kuwaiti daily al-Rai: “If we assume that Hizbullah possesses the same kind, caliber, or parts of rockets that Iran has, then that means that the Zilzal rocket, which holds a ton of explosives, and Fateh-110 and M600 rockets, each carrying half a ton of explosives, will be used in the next war.””

“FATEH-110”
BY DR. AZRIEL LORBER

THE MIDDLE EAST MISSILE MONITOR

October 5, 2004

SNIPPET: “It was thus refreshing, so to speak, to actually see an Iranian TV program which in fact did show the experimental launching of one such weapon - claimed to be the Fateh-110, and preceded by views of the missile on the launcher.”

SNIPPET: “The resulting new aerodynamic configuration will suffice to give the missile a much better trajectory control, with terminal accuracy limited only by the quality of the guidance inputs - inertial or GPS - which may justify the claims of the Iranians. Furthermore, this could be achieved by the usage of the fairly small fins on the nose with the attendant advantages of smaller actuators and lesser power requirements.

However, the better trajectory control has several other advantages. When flying a pure ballistic trajectory, the range of the FATEH-110 missile is generally given (In the literature) as approximately 170 kms, which also gives an apogee of more than 60 kms. If however at some point after burnout (but most probably after coming back down to an altitude of about 8 kms) the missile is flown in an aerodynamic gliding (coasting) mode, exchanging its excess velocity and altitude to aerodynamic lift, some 50 kms can be added to the range. Furthermore, the aerodynamic trajectory will complicate prediction of missile’s target and flight path and make interception more difficult.

Finally, for a small price in range, such a missile could maneuver in the lower atmosphere, further complicating the problem of interception.”

Hanan Greenberg
Latest Update: 05.21.10, 21:25 / Israel News

SNIPPET: “Escalation in Gaza: An IDF soldier sustained moderate wounds Friday evening after a Palestinian sniper fired at him from within the Gaza Strip.

The soldier, a tracker, was near the border fence in southern Gaza at the time of the incident. He sustained two bullet wounds to his shoulder and was taken for treatment at Soroka hospital in Beersheba.

The Salah al-Din Brigades of the Popular Resistance Committees claimed responsibility for the shooting attack. Group spokesman Abu Mujehad told Ynet that a sniper with the organization fired several shots at the soldier as he was crossing the border fence’s gate.”

Hezbollah says it will hit Israel ships in new war
Yahoo/AP ^ | May 25, 2010 | ZEINA KARAM
Posted on May 25, 2010 1:15:30 PM PDT by rdl6989

BEIRUT – The leader of Lebanon’s Hezbollah group warned Tuesday that his fighters would attack Israeli ships in the Mediterranean if the Jewish state imposes a sea blockade on Lebanon in any future war.

Hassan Nasrallah said his Iranian-backed group is now capable of destroying any military or commercial ships heading to Israeli ports.

Hezbollah and Israel fought a 34-day war in 2006 during which Israel imposed a sea and air embargo on Lebanon, saying it needed to prevent the guerrillas from being resupplied with weapons.

Nasrallah said Tuesday that Hezbollah now had the capability to inflict as much harm on Israel as it did in Lebanon during the 2006 war.

“Report: Syria arming Hezbollah from secret bases”

SNIPPET: “British Times reports satellite images reveal Shiite organization ‘allowed to operate freely’ at secret compound in Syrian town of Adra, from which missiles are sent to Lebanon. Intelligence sources say ongoing smuggling increases chances of Israeli strike”

Ynet
Published: 05.28.10, 09:01 / Israel News

SNIPPET: “The chances that Israel may send a “calibrated signal” to Hezbollah and Syria by launching a precise airstrike against a weapons convoy are increasing, the British Times reported on Friday, following reports of Israeli plans to bomb a Syrian arms convey as it crossed the border into Lebanon. The Israeli strike was reportedly called off at the last minute.

Friday’s report covered tensions in the region, and citied satellite images of secret arms depots in Syria, in which surface-to-surface missiles destined for Hezbollah are stored.

According to the report, the Times has been shown images of one such site, located in a compound near the town of Adra, northeast of Damascus. The site reportedly includes living quarters for Hezbollah fighters, arms sheds and a fleet of trucks used for transferring weapons. The facility is believed to be one of several used as a base for weapons deliveries.”

Hamas Ahoy!

Hamas Ahoy! Claudia Rosett, 05.28.10, 11:15 AM ET

With a flotilla of “peace activists” steaming toward the blockaded Gaza strip, Israeli authorities have been worrying about a showdown turning into a public relations disaster. That’s a sorry reflection not on Israel but on the willingness of a world audience to swallow almost any amount of propaganda, if it comes with a Gaza label.

The basic narrative spun by the organizers of this “freedom flotilla” is that some 700 “activists” from dozens of countries have boarded eight or nine ships filled with tons of “humanitarian aid.” Their mission is to run the Israeli blockade, “break the siege of Gaza” and “establish a permanent sea lane between Gaza and the rest of the world.” The umbrella website for this venture is labeled “The Free Gaza Movement,” and on it the “Free Gaza Team” of the “Freedom Flotilla Coalition” professes a dedication to nonviolence and respect for universal human rights.

... if Gaza were a peaceful and democratic enclave, unreasonably walled up by its neighbors. But there’s some important information that the flotilla crew omits. Gaza is a terrorist enclave. Gaza is controlled by an Islamist terrorist group, Hamas. And Hamas is: backed by Iran; headquarters some of its leaders in terror-sponsoring Syria; has a busy and violent history of suicide bombings, shootings and rocket and mortar attacks; and is dedicated in its charter to the destruction of Israel.

That is what the blockade is all about. It didn’t happen because the neighbors decided to victimize Gaza. Rather, it is Hamas-run Gaza that threatens the neighbors, and for that matter, is hostile generally to liberal, western societies.

Recall that in 2002, trying to stop the violence of Yasser Arafat’s second intifada, ...Israel in pursuit of that peace withdrew in 2005 from Gaza—
