Jindal:Sand Dikes Protecting Marshes Behind Elmer's Island (HEAVY oil, Feds won't allow more?)

The oil is spreading father, and coming in thicker gobs. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal gave his daily update after touring the coast.

"We landed today on Fourchon Beach," said Jindal "We saw tar balls today. That beach is 110 miles from the source of the spill."

Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal

Listen:

Jindal also said heavy oil washed up on Elmers Island -- and pointed out that if they hadn't worked so hard to close gaps in the island, oil would be in the inshore waters behind Grand Isle and in more coastal marshes.

"You can see this is heavy oil. We tried to stir this up, This isn't light oil. If this land bridge wasn't here, this oil would go right through, and there's nothing to stop it from getting into those wetlands," said Jindal.

The governor again urged the federal government to approve their request to dredge sand off the sea floor to build more berms to protect the wetlands.

Several thoughts here.

There seems to be some bizarro land where some are arguing the spill is OVERplayed, and some that it is way underplayed. Environmentalism vs Obama covering up their ineptitude vs whether safety checks were done under Bush etc etc.

I am going to watch Jindal more closely, because I think of all of the Governors on the Coast he is more likely to cut through the B.S.

Something seems off about the coverage of this...but I'm not sure what it is. There is a disconnect somewhere.

The truth is often in the middle..it isn't nothing, and it isn't a global kill event either.

One thing I do know, if this were under Bush the MSM would be covering it like Katrina.

Not sure why Jindal can't just build the berns and tell the Feds to take a hike. This is an issue where I think Governors should be more aggressive. But I'll admit I am not up on all of this, so I may be missing something.

No doubt the crude oil contains both light and heavy fractions. The light ends have probably evaporated.

Obama wants this to hurt the maximum amount of people as much as possible.

He dragged his feet doing anything and he’s done everything possible to slow things down.

He is a Saudi employee. Who do you think came up with the campaign money. Thank McCain-Feingold for making sure Repubs lost.

Where are those Texas fellers you used hay to sop up the oil. The hay sops it up and floats.

Put prisoners out there or pay the unemployed to sop it up.

Jindal disappoints me. After Katrina he was the only one saying ‘ don’t wait for permission- act and deal with the consequences later’ re. helicopters and rescue efforts. Now he waits for permission to protect his state?
For the life of me I don’t understand why ALL Gulf coast states don’t have protection measures against possible oil spills. How long have rigs been out there, did no one think there would ever be any accidents? There is not enough boom in the country to protect the Gulf coast- much less the east or west coast from oil spills . WHY NOT?
Yet I can face the fact that the country, as a whole, considers Louisiana expendable. Spending money to defend and protect a coastline that will be repeatedly devastated by hurricanes makes no sense. The marshes that will take millions to clean may very well be eradicated by a big storm this year.
We have to keep drilling. Petroleum is the basis for modern life . Drive baby, drive? Drill, baby, drill!
But, holy hooties, factor possible accidents into the process! This makes Ray-Ray Nagin not preparing a city for hurricanes look excusable. Hurricanes aren’t always around, oil rigs are.

It will take a lot of digging. The MSM reporters are some of the most clueless people on the planet. They no longer do research like a reporter should, or ask detailed probing questions. They just write what they feel or are told to write.

I agree with EVERYTHING you just said.

Bizarro land, indeed!

There are plenty of people here at FR who will tell you it is nothing.

I also do not understand why the governors don’t just take matters into their own hands and start the dredging. Better to beg forgiveness than ask permission....

It is CLEAR that in this time with THIS current administration that we have to take care of ourselves.
COnsidering that Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama all went for McCain in 2008, it is clear Obama does not give a crap what happens to those states and their coastal industry!

Don’t forget with Katrina Bush was the POTUS and as we all know more reasonable. With the Thug in Chief in charge things are different on that front.

This post is a gem.

And it explains why AZ isn’t getting help with illegal immigration either.

That is sad.

Even sadder - legislative ethics after the Jindal reforms.

Let me explain ‘Bizarro Land’:
The media , locally, IMMEDIATELY started calling this devastating, the end of a way of life,etc- for local seafood industry. LONG before a single tar ball, or anything else, hit the coast. The nation has had 4 weeks hearing this, and now that other states are saying LA seafood is unsafe( based on what the media has said), NOW the ‘negativity’ has to be countered!
Basically, LA wants full benefits of victim status( even before the fact) without the negative effects of the ‘disaster’.
Oil on water is bad- but the entire Gulf, and its seafood, is NOT going to be destroyed. Seafood can be obtained in other areas of the Gulf and other waters of the US.
This whole thing is classic LA mentality. Help us, pity us, but don’t think negatively about us: ‘”We’re devastated, but still come down and spend your $$, all is well.”
The media makes the panic, then decries it .
Alice in Wonderland would run screaming into the night while swallowing Prozac if she lived here.

and it explains why Tennessee hasn’t gotten much help with their flooding. What’s he gonna do when the oil starts hitting the beautiful beaches of FL?

Hmmm. He won’t help the panhandle cause those counties voted McCain. He will have to pick and choose which areas to commit our tax dollars to.

He is a straight up thug!

I was very impressed with the video of that device. I hope they have a number of them (sized extra large), ready to get to work! Heck, I’d like to invest in that little enterprise.

Jindal is the only government official taking decisive action, and the obamanoids don't like it. They have instructed the media whorehouse to raise a blanket of silence against his creative and innovative steps, and the obaman EPA will do everything in its power to see that the environment suffers maximum damage.

Where are the militant environmentalist whack jobs now? Where are the protests, the demands for action? Why aren’t they standing in a line at Buras, blocking the oil with their bodies?
Where is the activist outrage?
I’ll tell you- even THEY consider the Gulf Coast expendable.
