North Korean submarine fired a Chinese-made torpedo to sink the South Korean warship Cheonan, South Korean scientists said.
If confirmed, it would implicate China in the incident that killed 46 South Korean sailors and increased tensions on the volatile Korean peninsula.
U.S. defenders of Chinas communist government dismissed the report, saying there was no way to confirm whether a Chinese torpedo and not a North Korean-manufactured torpedo was used.
China affairs specialist William Triplett II said the sinking exposes a Beijing-Pyongyang arms relationship, something that is rarely mentioned in discussions of North Koreas missile and weapons buildup.
U.S. intelligence reports from the 1990s said that China had been supplying North Korea with arms for decades. It is also believed that the covert arms supply has been continuing, despite UN sanctions imposed after North Korea conducted two nuclear tests.
Essentially, the communist Chinese elite and the North Korean elite are partners, sometimes with others, in the business of smuggling weapons to the nastier parts of the world, Triplett wrote in a recent commentary piece published in the Washington Times.
Beijing doesn't want to be seen to have dirty hands. But it does want the money, and there is a lot of it, in foreign exchange, in the capable hands of offshore bankers who specialize in money laundering, he said.
Triplett said Chinas military develops arms and supplies technology and critical components to North Korea, such as solid rocket fuel.
It is not surprising that the North Koreans would use a Chinese torpedo on the South Korean navy or that Mr. Bae and his team could use modern acoustics research to reach their conclusion, he said.

Has Barry apologized to South Korea yet?
Given the attitudes of the current incumbent, it still lies far in the future.
Truer words have seldom been spoken.
I thought he was suppose to apologized to North Korea... all the mess involved in sinking a ship and all.
and how long before this evil clown is impeached?
This Obamanism has really got me confused.
Yes we know
Does anyone have a good link to a recent set of pictures of the ship? I’d like to get a feel for what the damage looks like after they put the hull pieces back in proximity to each other.
The clock is ticking!
I thought he was suppose to apologized to North Korea... all the mess involved in sinking a ship and all.
He'll apologize in advance....that way, when he poops in their face....Presto! He's ALREADY apologized! Brilliant!
Free Trade Bump!
Sunspots, maybe. /s
If only we repealed NAFTA, things like this wouldn’t happen.
I do not think you can implicate China, just because they supplied the torpedo? NK is totally responsible.
Besides, North Korea's hostility is Bush's fault!
Never expect morality from the immoral.
That's racist!
I don't mind being a racist...at least by the new liberal definition of the word where it just means you disagree with the policies of progressives.
Besides, North Korea's hostility is Bush's fault!
Indeed. But why did they wait until Obama's watch to commit the murder? I'm afraid Obama is going to have to take responsibility for something at some point. I think Vegas has an over under on when that might occur...about the 23rd century is the money line.
