I heard that story...back in those days, that kind of thing happened a lot. Publishing companies would crank out songs and then offer to them to whatever pop group happened to be in the studio at the time. Sometimes, you'd have multiple bands record the same song and whoever hit the charts with it first got the promotional $$$ to take it all the way up.

Pop artists were pretty much interchangeable in those days. For example, Cher turned down "The Night The Lights Went Out In Georgia" which ended up being a number one hit for Vicki Lawrence. Probably would have been a number one song for anybody back in those days.
