Ford says it will create 170 jobs in the next two years at two of its plants near Detroit, as the automaker seeks to bring battery-pack manufacturing and hybrid-transmission assembling for its next line of pure electric cars and hybrids to the U.S., a report says.

According to the Associated Press, Ford will invest $10 million in its Ypsilanti factory to build battery packs, resulting in around 40 new jobs. These battery packs are currently being assembled in Mexico by Delphi. Ford hasn't revealed the identity of the supplier who will be providing the company with advanced lithium-ion battery cells, the report says. Ford will invest $125 million at the company's Sterling Heights plant to build the hybrid transmissions, leading to 130 new jobs. These transmissions are currently being manufactured in Japan. Ford's president of the Americas, Mark Fields, tells AP that talks with the United Auto Workers on wages and productivity helped paved the way for the job creation.

Whoo-Hoo! That's 170 jobs over a two year period! The Great Recession is over!

I'm thankful for anything at all, but this is pretty small stuff.

If the UAW did not exist - there would be plenty of jobs in Michigan.

Detroit will lose that many jobs by the end of today.

Total nonfarm employment for the Detroit-Warren-Livonia Metropolitan Statistical Area stood at 1,676,600 in March 2010, 82,000 below its year-ago level.

Bureau of Labor Statistics

Wow, a loss of 82,000 - but Detroit MAY gain back 170 jobs in 2 years ... I guess the Pres. Jughead stimulus programs are working!! < /sarcasm>

Sounds like another good reason to build high-speed rail and maglev instead.

$80K jobs for UAW members with full perks and benes are no doubt going to cost the rest of us $500K apiece in subsidies.

Chrysler announced recently, they are going to have job openings in Detroit...

Chrysler has been trying to hire skilled machinists and die makers in Detroit for at least the past decade.

That is because they did not put anyone thru an apprenticeship between 1980-1997. Then they all retired at once. Brilliant planning! These aren’t the sort of jobs you can just walk in off the street and qualify for.
