I thought they would have to cut the top off the riser to perform this procedure. That will immediately open her up full blast. I suspect that is why the feed will be cut.

I thought they would have to cut the top off the riser to perform this procedure. That will immediately open her up full blast. Not for the top kill; the mud will be flowing into the BOP and (hopefully) wellbore via the choke and kill lines at the bottom of the BOP.
It's doubtful that the riser is limiting flow, in any case.
