"Science Daily Headlines reports on research by Oregon State University marine geologist Chris Goldfinger showing that earthquakes of magnitude 8.2 (or higher) have occurred 41 times during the past 10,000 years in the Pacific Northwest. By extrapolation, there is a 37% chance of another major earthquake in the area in the next 50 years that could exceed the power of recent seismic events in Chile and Haiti. If a magnitude-9 quake does strike the Cascadia Subduction Zone, extending from northern Vancouver Island to northern California, the ground could shake for several minutes, highways could be torn to pieces, bridges may collapse, and buildings would be damaged or even crumble. If the epicenter is just offshore, coastal residents could have as little as 15 minutes of warning before a tsunami could strike. 'It is not a question of if a major earthquake will strike,' says Goldfinger, 'it is a matter of when. And the "when" is looking like it may not be that far in the future.'"Read below for more.

Say WA? Evergreen State ping This has been a possibility for a long time.
The last one occurred on 26 January 1700 at around 9:00PM. They happen about every 500 years on average, often accompanied by tsunamis. There is evidence of at least 13 events at intervals from about 300 to 900 years with an average of 590 years. Previous earthquakes are estimated to have occurred in 1310 AD, 810 AD, 400 AD, 170 BC and 600 BC
We’re also at risk of getting slammed by an asteroid.
“Could”, “May”, “Could”, “Could”, “Could”.....
Plenty of reason for raising taxes and imposing another six layers of bureaucracy and regulation....
You can go out to the bluffs around here and find evidence of them dating back millions of years.
When we lived in Corvallis, we always heard that a wave would come over the Coast Range from Newport. We also felt a number of “temblers”(is that what they are called?), including one that broke a building in two up in Mount Angel. It seems that the whole area is subject to a plate sliding off shore about 20 miles (?) and then the entire NW will get a tsunami that will make others look like BigSurf swim centers.

And everyone is at risk for cancer. And if you drive on the highways you could get killed in a auto accident. And some day everyone now living will grow old and feeble and on and on......
My point being ... tell us something we don't know.
If you go to Long beach you can see some short narrow hills that are actually sand dunes created durring these events. I don’t think you will find any in Corvalis, however. You should be safe other then having you house shake apart around you.
I live at 1000’ on a mountain at the foot of the Olympic Mountains on the North Olympic Peninsula.
I should have a great view of it all.
I am nearly convinced that there is no way to get out of this life without dying.
I just hope that all of my toys survive such a catastrophe.... I don’t want to come out of retirement ;>)
I don't think you need to worry about a Tsunami.
I’ve been hearing this my whole life, I can remember 4 quakes since the late 70’s? It seems as though things are slipping nicely, from what I understand this prevents a huge quake, due to less pent up stress. Obviously it has happened in the past, but...... who knows.

This may be a new story but it is old news to us on the Humboldt County coast where Dr Lori Dengler, geologist at Humboldt State has well documented past quakes of 9+...
