Up from the deep sea: a nightmare for Obama

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Up from the briny deep of the Gulf of Mexico came a nightmare for President Barack Obama.

Unlike Hurricane Katrina and its immediate, frightful images of people in crisis, the gushing BP oil well has been a slow-moving behemoth that is now taking a political toll on the president.

Obama was already immersed in a long list of problems -- pushing a financial regulation overhaul, prodding Europe to stem a financial crisis, pressuring Iran and North Korea.

And don't forget the 9.9 percent U.S. jobless rate, two wars and Obama's hopes for immigration and energy legislation before Washington stops for November 2 congressional elections.

Now the greatest environmental calamity since the Exxon Valdez spill in 1989 has fallen into his lap. He declared it "heartbreaking."

"We will not rest until this well is shut, the environment is repaired and the cleanup is complete," Obama said on Wednesday. He makes his second visit to the Gulf on Friday.

The word at the White House is that Obama is frustrated at the delays BP Plc has encountered in stopping the leak. "Plug the damn hole," he has told senior government officials.

And he is feeling heat from some of his own allies to get something done.

Perfect example of why leftism is a mental disease. They claim that most problems in this country stem from “lack of regulation” while completely forgetting that public bureaucrats are people too. They can have integrity and do their jobs properly, but most of the people who go into civil service do so because they know they won’t have to work very hard (and get better pay and benefits for not working very hard).

Who will watch the watchers? Nobody. But lefties still want more of them.

In the private sector, companies have to compete in their markets and cater to the demands of their clients and are, generally, self-policing because of this.

If it comes down to trusting a man’s greed and self-interest or trusting his integrity, I’ll take greed and self-interest every time.

Can you imagine if Bush was still president? The MSM would have people so infuriated we would have had riots.

It’s extremely painful for them to criticize obama.

I am envisioning a political cartoon of a bunch of volunteers in white NBC, CNN, CBS coveralls and gloves, spray bottles and brushes in hand, frantically trying to scrub clean an oil-coated Obama. Wish I could draw better ...
