EXCLUSIVE: White House asked Clinton to talk to Sestak about Senate run
Washington Post ^ | May 28, 2010 | Greg Sargent

Posted on 05/28/2010 7:09:26 AM PDT by maggief

Senior White House advisers asked former President Bill Clinton to talk to Joe Sestak about whether he was serious about running for Senate, and to feel out whether he'd be open to other alternatives, according to sources familiar with the situation.

But the White House maintains that the Clinton-Sestak discussions were informal, according to the sources. The White House, under pressure to divulge the specifics of its interactions with Sestak, will release a formal statement later today outlining their version of events, including Clinton's involvement.

According to the sources, White House chief of staff Rahm Emanuel asked Clinton and his longtime adviser, lawyer Doug Band, to talk to Sestak about the race. It's unclear right now whether the White House will say that Clinton was asked to suggest specific administration positions for Sestak, whether Clinton floated positions on his own, whether Clinton discussed other options not related to the adminstration, or whether employment even came up at all in the talks.

Sestak says federal job was offered to quit race
Philadelphia Inquirer, The (PA) - Friday, February 19, 2010
Author: Thomas Fitzgerald, Inquirer Staff Writer

Rep. Joe Sestak (D., Pa.) said yesterday that the White House offered him a federal job in an effort to dissuade him from challenging Sen. Arlen Specter in the state’s Democratic primary. The disclosure came during an afternoon taping ofLarry Kane: Voice of Reason, a Sunday news-analysis show on the Comcast Network. Sestak would not elaborate on the circumstances and seemed chagrined after blurting out “yes” to veteran news anchor Kane’s direct question. “Was it secretary of the Navy ?” Kane asked. “No comment,” Sestak said. “Was it [the job] high-ranking?” Kane asked. Sestak said yes, but added that he would “never leave” the Senate race for a deal. The White House did not respond yesterday to requests for comment, though a senior Democrat in the state said that officials there were angry at Sestak ‘s account and denied any offer was made. Later yesterday, Sestak said he recalled the White House offer coming in July, as he was preparing to formally announce his Senate candidacy in August. He declined to identify who spoke to him or the job under discussion. Sestak also would not say whether the person who approached him worked for the administration or was an intermediary for the offer. “I’m not going to say who or how and what was offered,” Sestak said in an interview. “I don’t feel it’s appropriate to go beyond what I said,” because the conversation was confidential. Sestak , 58, a retired Navy admiral, has said that some Pennsylvania Democratic leaders have tried to entice him to drop his campaign with promises of support for other offices in the future. He also has said that Sen. Robert Menendez of New Jersey, chairman of the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee, urged him to run when Specter was still a Republican, then tried to force him out after Specter switched parties. But Sestak has brushed aside talk of White House pressure. “He asked me the question, and I had to answer it honestly,” Sestak said of his exchange with Kane. Sestak said he had declined the job offer immediately and added, “The person said, ‘I knew you’d say that.’

Hm. Tough call. I’m leaning Clintons though with so many of their people in Obama’s administration.

Interesting. In the second picture, Clinton has the same look on his face that Dick Cheney did at the inauguration.

If America buys this Bull Sh$t, then I would say the country is done - stick a fork in America. The poser will be re-elected in 2012, and the GOP will not take back Congress in 2010.

We are going to end up further left than Europe.

"These arrogant fools...we need to take them down..."

I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but the RATS own the whole legal establishment and the cover-up will be so nauseating that we'll have to get a 3 year supply of Tums. OBTW, more worrisome news...HOW in the hell did Dingy Harry get his wrinkle @$$ neck to neck with the pub candidates in Nevada? What happen?? This is MORE troubling than the oil spill!

sestak said it was a “white house official”. the clenis is not a “white house official”

Yes, but if someone was trying to come up with a euphemism for "a prominent cabinet spouse," what else would there be to say?

But the White House maintains that the Clinton-Sestak discussions were informal

So, here I am in a bar, and talking with a guy about robbing a bank. The cops find out and arrest us, so we now have the defense that our talks were "informal".

Such talks are feeling out discussions to see if they can go further. Michael Corleone and Tony Soprano were real good at that.

Next? According to the Clinton body count, he could very well be a master at it.

You’re right. The story doesn’t make sense. But I can see bubba helping the rats to win another seat in the Senate without necessarily getting anything tangible out of the lie. Their hatred for Republicans trumps all.

I just pinged you to the other thread before I saw your post.

This is interesting:

“The report will be released one day after President Obama said the White House would issue a formal explanation that should answer questions about Sestak’s allegation and insisted “nothing improper” happened. On the same day, Clinton had lunch with Obama.”

This stinks to high heaven!

Perhaps Clinton offered to share a POA with Sustek and he thought that meant a government job.
