AP news break via ABC News Radio that the top kill plug has failed and has not worked. Link to follow...
It’s unfortunate that BP hasn’t been able to stop the leak at this point, but I think more effort (and media coverage) should be focused on preventing the spread of the oil. There are several untried options out there. This is where the Obama admin has true responsibility.
Crimp it.
They need to insert a refrigerant coil into the well, pump seawater into the well around the coil (using the already installed mud pump) and then pump refrigerant through the coils to freeze the seawater in place, enabling them to then cap the well with concrete.
Sounds so simple it may just work.

I was thinking more of a long sticky fibril type material that could clot up the leak long enough to put a permanent cap on it.
This is the third time in three days that the media has announced it failed, I guess they’re going to keep at it until they finally get it right. The actual news conference is at 2pm PDT, in about 25 minutes. What Doug apparently said this morning is that the effort hasn’t stopped the flow. Stopping the flow isn’t going to happen until the well is under control, which would be the last step of Top Kill. The more important issue is how far down the well they’ve been able to push the mud, and how much pressure reduction they’ve monitored. They said last night that it’d be 24 to 48 hours before they had a handle on whether it was working. We’ll see if Suttles has anything to offer that actually changes that during the press conference.
I’ve got reservations in Gulf Shores at the end of July. Still hanging on.

And from what I have seen, and been watching, the holes the oil is coming through are now bigger, more oil coming.
I think they are drilling so-called “relief wells” that will put the thing out, but they are still a month away from being completed.
Now, whoever is pulling the strings on Sham-Wow-Guy “The Wizzard of BOZ” has got to get the World War started really soon to take the heat off the Man Behind the Curtain...
