Since I first heard how a BOP works I’ve been amazed it didn’t have a spring return to a failed closed position. Why the hydraulic system was blown up, the valve would not work. That’s HAZOP step 1.

There is no 'failed close' position as it is not an ordinary valve. It is a device that pinches off the pipe to stop the flow.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/dr-philip-neches/gulf-oil-spill-meet-the-b_b_589852.html

In 1922, two men named Abercrombie and Cameron created a device to eliminate gushers, called a blow out preventer, or BOP. Basically, it is a big valve that sits on the top of the well hole. When the pressure or flow from within the well is too great, the valve closes, stopping the flow. There are two different kinds of valves: ram and annular. A ram valve uses a number of pistons or rams that close around the drill pipe (called a "drill string" in the trade), shear through the pipe, and then seal the well hole. The annular design, created in 1946 by a man named Knox, uses a hemisphere of rubber reinforced by steel ribs for the same purpose. The annular valve operates more smoothly, requiring less hydraulic pressure, resulting in longer service life.

A giant can of that expanding foam :p

Actually, I wonder how that stuff behaves under a mile of seawater and in the cold?

you beat me to it

I think a lot of old fashioned sincere prayer for the good people trying to fix this and for our nation wouldn’t hurt. God knows our immature incomptent potus won’t be touching base with the Lord anytime soon

Put the mud back in the hole then crushed stone behind it. Not golf balls!

Pray................

I’ve been doing a lot of that.

That is by far the most important thing we can do. If God wants this to end, it will.

Necessity is the mother of invention. Frankly we need more of these challenges.

I'm quite confident that Americans in this field can solve this but the question in my mind is...will they be allowed to fix it. (as in don't let a good crisis go to waste)

Also, apparently, Kevin Costner is down there and has been working on technology for this very situation (as far as oil spills themselves) The centrifuge equipment apparently can at least clean up and he has many individual machines manufactured. BP is supposedly considering his technology. Scroogle/Google Kevin Costner Centrifuge. Stephen Baldwin called in to Rush Limbaugh's show yesterday as well as he is down there filming a documentary. He went into quite a bit of detail about Costner's project (seems Costner is doing some good things...at least at first glance).

They need to hook up as many hoses as possible to the BOP at the ports where they are injecting mud and pump oil/gas instead.

Don't cap it .. capture it ...

Any oversized funnel thingy with a large flexible hose up and above the surface held by floatation device(s)

Pump sea water and all into tankers that either spin it out up there or go someplace to have it spun out.

It gives us time to develope a permanent fix and no more oil goes into the gulf

That's what I though what I though! too much pressure.

In other words anything they put down was BLOWN out!

So try to capture what is going to continue coming out....As we don't have the resource's to hold it back with mud ...

Well, I am totally clueless, but here is my thought. They had a giant concrete container box they initially lowered with a relief pipe. It was ineffective because the methane crystalized inside and clogged it.

Why not put it back in place while they pump mud and the golf balls in. The pressure will slow enough being contained in the container to allow the mud to start down the pipe.

Since the outflow is what is stopping them, slow the outflow first and then the plug will have a chance.

Sucking on the well will only bring up more oil. I don't think the ports have to capacity to suck it all in.

Yeah I read about Costners project. He’s put some 25 million dollars into the development of his machines.

Liberals are far more tolerable when they actually do something.

Instead of pouring down mud, how about pouring Democrats into the oil leak?

That’s exactly right. There’s too much pressure so the focus should be on capturing it.

Put Putin in charge.

I know he’s a dangerous thug - but he gets stuff done, he’s a macho man that understands the oil business better than O, and as far as commies go - well, it isn’t surprising when a russian is a commie.
