It was, apparently they had side arms but carried
nonlethal paint guns, not expecting assualt from the
“peace” activists.

Rubber balls, tear gas balls, a few other types can be fired from paintball guns. Non lethal but sometimes effective for crowd control.

The initial IDF team did have paintballs. When the “peace activists”
were exposed as being armed with handguns, IDF
shifted to live ammo.

They did have paintball guns. Israelis did not fire the lethal guns until there was only one other outcome - being lynched by the mob of “peace activists”.
