(CT Board of Ed.)2. Within 10 days of the start of a home instruction program, parents must file a “Notice of Intent” form with the local superintendent.

Standardized Tests: Not required by statute or regulation. However, “an annual portfolio review will be held with the parents and school officials to determine if instruction in the required courses has been given.” (“Revised Procedures,” p. 3).

I had gotten the above from the HSLDA site. If it is super-ceded by state law and/or state Constitution, I am happy to sit corrected. I am from CT, and I remember one family preparing a "portfolio." For my part, I went to private school from sixth grade on, and I don't remember my folks having to file any paperwork, though the school itself might have.

I agree with you; any state that simply lets you raise your own children (whom you should care about more than any teacher could) is doing okay, at least on that score.

CT has vastly better pizza in New Haven than Illinois(although Piece Pizza on North Ave. in Chicago is excellent New Haven style pizza). Tom Scott got rid of toll booths in CT. Big plusses. Weather is better overall in CT, and CT doesn't use way too much salt on the roads. On the other hand, most counties in IL do NOT have emissions/safety checks, and you can do most motor vehicle business at a private company instead of DMV (CT's DMV is miserable).

Apparently, it is a requirement that a federal judge be ignorant and stupid, to boot!

This stupid bitch should try reading the Constitution, rather than the Village Voice.

Board officials said the church, which fits 3,000 people, had enough space at the right price. Two students and three of their parents sued, claiming the decision was an unconstitutional government endorsement of religion.

There are 5 people with entirely too much time on their hands. I'd say 2995 people calling to give them a piece of their mind would keep them busy for a while.

"(CT Board of Ed.)2. Within 10 days of the start of a home instruction program, parents must file a “Notice of Intent” form with the local superintendent."

That is one of the reasons why I don't - simply because the School Board wants it (I know, perhaps childish on my part to stick my tongue out like that).
Like I said, the adults at HSLDA think we should comply (although we don't have to, State law trumps School Board) - I intend to next year. As much of a rebel as I like to be, I also know enough to listen to the recommendations of one's attorney....

They should offer an alternate graduation site for anyone who is uncomfortable being in a church. The five who sued can have their graduation ceremony in a classroom (or a closet) at the school building.

Or perhaps we need to continue growing the concept of the separation of school and state.

I would permanently shun these five people (although I probably wouldn't have associated with anyone so self-absorbed even without that lawsuit). As for the judge, I hope she catches what she deserves from everyone in her life. It's a learning opportunity that should be delivered to her now, when she most needs it.

Since when is renting a building the same as congress establishing a religion?

It isn't. However, you could say you were going to a strip joint on Church Street and the ACLU, which by the way was founded by communists, would consider THAT to be the government establishing a religion.

There is only one thing that government schools do very well! They get groups of citizens furious with each other.

Solution: Close down the government schools.

Also...Conservatives should remember that any government powerful enough to have a school graduation in a church, is powerful enough to have one in a mosque or pagan shrine.

Finally...It is impossible to have a religiously neutral school. Government schools are NOT religiously neutral, never have been, and never will be.

**ALL** government schools are a First Amendment and freedom of conscience abomination!

One word: Appeal.

This is when I wish I were filthy rich, to fund an appeal of nonsense like this.

I guess all Connecticut public schools are unconstitutional—after all, public schools were formed in the 19th Century for the purpose of teaching the students to read, so they could the Bible, God’s Word.

Oops.

I'm aware of the current situation, but I guess I've never figured out why anyone cares what the ACLU says given that they're idiots. Even if a city council were to advocate for a particular denomination of a church (which they wouldn't anyway) they still aren't the US Congress.

The whole point was to avoid the national government setting up a church like the church of England with the king as the head. Well, Congress hasn't ever set up such a church and no one seems even the least bit interested in doing so. So where did we go wrong in listening to this fools, and why does it continue?

I'm guessing it has to do with perversion of the courts...did I get it in one?

Tis the season.
^^^^^^^^^^^^^

It is always the season!

If it isn't proms, it is graduations or one of a thousand religiously non-neutral issues that all government schools must deal with as politically powerful groups of citizens fight for the hearts and minds of the next generation of voters.

I have a solution:

Shut down all the government schools tomorrow. Give each student a voucher for 1/3 the cost of what it costs the state now to educate a child in a government school. Over the next 10 years reduce the amount of the voucher and decrease property taxes. In ten years expect the parent to take full responsibility of educating their own children.

Yeah! There would be complete chaos for a few years, but parents would figure it out, and charity would step up to take care of the poor.

What we might see is what the U.S. had prior to the 1850s: homeschools, church schools, tutoring by neighbors, tutoring academies in the homes of neighbors, and apprenticeships.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Absolutely the only rational answer to these continuing battles over government school policies and curriculum.

Finally,...The idea that it is impossible to have a religiously, culturally, and politically neutral education is catching on!

Step #2 in that thinking process is, “Gee! I guess that means government schools are not religiously, culturally, or politically neutral!”

With step #3 the only conclusion possible, of course, is that **all** government schools must then be a First Amendment and freedom of conscience abomination!

Where was that judge when Obama and other politicians appeared at churches during their campaigns?

So if they defied the Judges order who exactly would be held in contempt?

The superintendent?

The principle?

Both?

If I were either one I would have no problem taking the jail time.

Time for some patriots to stand up to unconstitutional tyranny.

They would be heros in my eyes.

Time to take America back!

“You’re promised an education (hopefully), not a ceremony.”

Funny thing, they don’t even get an “education” so much as a lesson in how forcing the bringing together of a whole bunch of people only creates click’s of GROUPS who choose not to associate with other students because of race, wealth, hair color, status, looks, class selection, grade level, grad scores, etc...

Now that I think about it why hasn’t the ACLU sued to shutdown these racist institutions and demanded payment for all the injustice that is being perpetrated? /s

Mosques have meeting rooms for things that have nothing to do with worship. You will find they do not allow females to cross the main floor where prayers are held.

It's probably not likely there are any mosques in the US big enough to handle a graduation and not violate some of their customs.
