On the eve of the state Republican convention, GOP gubernatorial hopeful Rick Lazio yesterday glossed over inter-party squabbling and came out swinging against Democratic nominee Andrew Cuomo.
"People -- I don't care if they're Democrats or Independents or Republicans -- look at Andrew Cuomo trying to run against the establishment and they laugh. Andrew Cuomo is the establishment," Lazio said during a Memorial Day parade in Queens yesterday.
The former Republican congressman from Long Island went on to criticize Cuomo -- the state's popular attorney general who is considered difficult to beat in the race to replace departing Gov. Paterson -- for being self-centered and too ambitious.
"It's always about him, so people want someone who's going to stick up for the average common taxpayer, who will do the right thing . . . not somebody who manipulates and massages to get to the next political bullet point on their résumé."

He needs to rip hard at “Andy from the HUD”
That would be refreshing to see, not holding my breath though.
Very disappointing pick. I remember the lackadaisical campaign he ran against the Hilderbeast for the NY Senate seat. His only theme seemed to be “I’m not Hillary”, which anyone who follows politics knows is a sure loser. I would have much rather seen Palidino (sp?) as the pick. That being said, I hope he learned something from his last big race. He needs to get out there early and put Coumo on the defensive, then start laying out a plan to bring business back to the state.

LOL. Yes you’re right about that debate, but the NY Press (heart of the MSM) savaged him. After that his campaign seemed to sputter out. He also took his time getting his campaign started if I remember right. I remember the press dubbed him “Rick Lazy-o”. I only hope he’s learned something from that and he goes after this guy with both barrels. If there was ever a machine candidate it’s Coumo. His father mortgaged everything in the state and was responsible for sinking the Shoreham plant so his family bears much responsibility for the mess the state is in.
Little Ricky has no fire, no balls and no chance.
Right or wrong, this is a losing campaign platform in New York given the fact that the Murder rate in New York (and violent crime, in general) is substantially lower than all of the well-known death penalty states.

The same Andy Boy Coomo that McCain wanted to nominate for a high position in his administration.
He allegedly “invaded her space” during a debate and was skewered for being “sexist” as a result.
You forget that Lazio was a latecomer to the race against Hillary. He only had about 6 weeks after Guiliani dropped out due to cancer, I believe. He was totally winning upstate NY and I think he would have beat her if he had had more time.
