A U.S. citizen who lived in Turkey is among the nine people killed when Israeli commandos stormed a Turkish aid ship heading for the Gaza Strip, officials said today. The victim was identified as Furkan Dogan, 19, a Turkish-American. A forensic report said he was shot at close range, with four bullets in his head and one in his chest, according to the Anatolian news agency.

Dogan was a high school student studying social sciences in the town of Kayseri in central Turkey. He was born in the United States and moved to Turkey at the age of 2. He will be buried in his hometown tomorrow.

The body was returned to Turkey today along with eight others, all Turkish nationals, who were on board the Mavi Maramara.

He won’t attack Israeli forces again.

What's less likely? While engaging a hoard of angry vigilantes, the IDF takes the time to shoot wounded on the ground. It's just not very plausible, given the scenario.

It's quite plausible, actually. The guy goes down with a shot to the chest, but is still moving. A quick burst to the head takes next to no time, and puts him out of action for good.

It makes a brutal sort of sense, but it's not particularly conducive to making a case for self-defense, especially on the PR front.

Possibly, would not put it past them. But I also would not underestimate the abilities of a well trained Israeli with an automatic weapon.

It’s a tragedy, LOL.

But the truth is better for the Israelis, much as we would all like to think they just revved a 40 tonne Kill-dozer over her :0)

There is an older Mafia phrase of, “Two in the hat”. ( You don’t technically need to be wearing a hat. )

"But it's less believable for what is reported here, which is four shots to the head and one to the chest. "

Not at all. The barrel usually travels in an upward direction, and slightly angled depending on the twist of the barrel, when firing on full auto. It's very likely that the 4th or 5th round would leave the "chest" area and strike somewhere on the head or high neck.

I think people are painting a mental picture of four tightly grouped shots in the middle of the chest, and one between the eyes, just for good measure. We have NO IDEA what the wound pattern looked like, the provenance of this "report", or the accuracy of the reporter who actually wrote this piece. As someone else pointed out, this sentence in the report is encouraging with respect to accuracy...

This kid was 19, but in the paragraph above they say the dead range from 32 to 61. Lousy writing?

A wounded enemy in the course of a fight can still kill you. A dead one cannot.

You appear to have it backwards. The article says he was shot four times in the head and once in the chest.

No, actually four to the head and one in the chest sounds like he was targeted by two or three different soldiers at the same time. Someone went center mass while the others went for the headshot.

Not that it matters though, the end result is still a dead terrorist so what do I care how many people got an assist on this one?

a 19-year old HIGH SCHOOL student? Studying social science in some backwater town in central Turkey? That just does not pass the smell test.

"The article says he was shot four times in the head and once in the chest. "

Yes, I know what the article says. But, the article says that the "victims" were also all aged 32 to 61 - the same article that is ostensibly about a "19-year old American".

I have no faith in this reporter's ability to get any facts correct, to especially include the wound patter, when they get other so patently obvious facts so plainly wrong.

I’ve heard “double-tap” before the Zombie movie reference ... Zombieland just tends to be the reference that comes to mind to most civilian non-assassins (haha).

I think ‘double-tap’ is a pretty common special forces term ... good way to drop a guy and make sure he ain’t getting back up.

I’ve always heard of a double-tap to the head — but apparently it refers to just a quick two-shot succession anywhere on the body (pause just long enough to reaquire the sights). The technique apparently originated after full-metal-jacketed bullets — where a single shot won’t necessarly do enough damage to keep a guy down. According to Wikipedia, “The tactic is still used today by firearms handlers, police tactical teams, military personnel, counter-terrorist combat units, and other special forces personnel.”

True ... but do you really want to defend a policy of shooting the wounded in this case, and maybe as a more general policy?

Brutal practicality aside, PR-wise it's terrible.

If the IDF had gotten to the point of shooting wounded enemies because they "can still kill you," it begins to suggest a different mindset on the part of the IDF than the interdiction raid they've been trying to describe heretofore.

They'd better get busy building a case -- with hard evidence -- to justify their actions, because stuff like this could end up steam-rollering them.

Just as easy to imagine the chest shot not putting him down, and the other four being fired on auto - at closer range - to put the guy down.

Well, I guess that's as far as theory can take us. We'll just have to wait for CSI Gaza Strip (Special Boat Section) to turn in their forensic report.
