GENEVA (AFP) – A North Korean diplomat said Thursday that tensions on the Korean peninsula were running so high over the sinking of a South Korean warship that "war may break out at any moment."
In a speech to the international Conference on Disarmament, Ri Jang-Gon, deputy permanent representative for North Korea at the United Nations in Geneva, blamed the "grave situation" on South Korea and the United States.
"The present situation of the Korean peninsula is so grave that a war may break out at any moment," he said.
International investigators on May 20 announced their findings that a North Korean submarine had fired a heavy torpedo to sink the warship, in what has been described as the most serious act of aggression from the North since the Korean war 60 years ago.
Forty-six South Korean crew died when the warship sank near the disputed Yellow Sea border with the North in March in mysterious circumstances after a reported explosion.
South Korea has announced a series of reprisals including cutting off trade with its communist neighbour.
The North has denied involvement, and responded to the South's reprisals with threats of war.
Ri reiterated that North Korea had nothing to do with the sinking.
He claimed that North Koreans "were making their utmost efforts to attain the goal of a powerful and prosperous country by the year 2012" and needed a "peaceful environment" to do so.

Given that DPRK has almost invariably ginned up situations that they attribute to the ROK that they consider to be attacks, this statement tells me that they are planning to drop the hammer. They’ve formally assigned blame for the overall situation to the ROK and the West, and therefore any combat activity now becomes defense, not aggression, and now all that is needed is the actual trigger event, which they are now on the lookout for. I really think it’s going to go down, and will do so within the next 2 months.
The way things are going, they may achieve parity with the U.S. by 2011.
The little runt from the north is really getting on my nerves,he should be made to eat his words..Cram them down his ugly mouth..The thing is he knows we have a yellow bellied coward for a president and he is going to push as far as he can until he gets some more money..If war breaks out he will soon learn that he is not so powerful after all..My money would be on the South With or with out the help of America..
If the Norks are advertising it they aren’t planning it. To have a chance to succeed an attack has to have maximum surprise while relations are good and the alert is at a low.
Norkea may return to the continuous “border incidents” of yesteryear but I doubt they have any operative plans for invasion right now. Kim does need the diversion of an enemy and a publicity ramp-up of fear to take the population’s mind off their bellies and their dying kids.
The trigger event should be massive explosions, maybe nuclear, on the huge concentrations of artillery aimed at Seoul.
Yeah, it should be, but more likely, it will be some innocuous action taken by ROK or the US, like a troop movement or propaganda initiative, which the DPRK will “interpret” as prelude to an all-out assault, and they will being combat operations, citing a need to preemptively act in order to maintain their sovereignty.

Methinks if they were going to attack they would have done so by now. This is a whole lot of bombast from a starving country ruled by criminals.
That having been said, it remains true that the US is at its weakest nadir since the treasonous nonfeasance of the Carter administration. And no one can gainsay the fact that weakness invites aggression.

North Korea has long exemplified the adage that “barking dogs seldom bark.” This is far from the first time they have reacted with bluster and bellicose threats to anything that doesn’t go their way. I am extremely doubtful if any major military confilict comes out of this latest hissy fit on their part.
At the same time, the paranoid, psychotic and desperately dysfunctional regime that rules the North is capable of anything and may surprise everyone. If so, and a second Korean War breaks out, I seriously doubt our present Commander in Chief has the spine or the expertise to deal with an issue of this magnitude. So far, he’s had a remarkably priviliged free ride. Pray for peace— just in case.

Dr. Kim Hyun-sik, who was a former professor at Pyongyang University and a tutor to the dictators’ family, came to educate the UNC-Duke student body on North Korea..
At the presentation, Professor Kim cited the Ten Principles of the Juche Ideology. They are the following:
1. We must give our all in the struggle to unify the entire society with the revolutionary ideology of the Great Leader Kim Il Sung.
2. We must honor the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung with all our loyalty.
3. We must make absolute the authority of the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung.
4. We must make the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung? revolutionary ideology our faith and make his instructions our creed.
5. We must adhere strictly to the principle of unconditional obedience in carrying out the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung’s instructions.
6. We must strengthen the entire partys ideology and willpower and revolutionary unity, centering on the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung.
7. We must learn from the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung and adopt the communist look, revolutionary work methods and people-oriented work style.
8. We must value the political life we were given by the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung, and loyally repay his great political trust and thoughtfulness with heightened political awareness and skill.
9. We must establish strong organizational regulations so that the entire party, nation and military move as one under the one and only leadership of the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung.
10.We must pass down the great achievement of the revolution by the Great Leader comrade Kim Il Sung from generation to generation, inheriting and completing it to the end.
One of Professor Kim’s most salient anecdotes from amongst a stream of startling experiences was one that underscored the bizarreness of the Juche Ideology — bizarre at least to the rest of the world afar from North Korea’s totalitarian paradigm. Where Professor Kim taught at Pyongyang University, student leaders were selected by the Worker’s Party according to generational loyalties. The student chosen for Class President had a father extremely loyal to the State. Being awarded the occupation of fisherman (which is one of the country’s most prestigious civilian occupations), the father had the Worker’s Party’s trust in frequenting outside of the country’s borders yet not venturing to other lands, and also had fish to eat in an isolated land riddled with starvation.
On one unfortunate day, the class president was stripped of his title and subjected to much humiliation by the entire school. The reason: his father was reported to be missing, to have allegedly run away. This was just one example of the norms created by the Juche Ideology. The Juche Ideology creates a single-minded society, in which it is everyone’s goal and purpose in life to serve the State and bring as much glory to Kim Jung Il as possible. Behind every action and motivation are the Juche principles. One’s application of the Juche principles affects himself, his children, and grandchildren. Disloyalty is punishable for up to three generations.
This true story ends with the son of the fisherman reclaiming his position as class president. A dead body was washed ashore some time later and wrapped around his wrist was a ball of tape tightly wound. Cutting the ball of tape to its very center appeared a picture of Kim Il Sung. Though the body was decayed, the picture remained well-preserved. This dead man was found to be the student’s father, and the boy was immediately exalted back to his position as class president. Professor Kim also recounted a similar story in which during a flood, the mother chose to save a painting of Kim Jung Il from the waters instead of her drowning child. The Juche Ideology embodies the deification of the dictators, and even the iconification of them. Taught from birth, it is their life, their drive, their sole purpose.

An international eye doctor is allowed inside North Korea for 10 days to perform cataract surgery on patients. Entering along with him is an American reporter (her sister is the journalist who is currently captured by the North Korean government; see previous blog entry for news article) who has hidden cameras in the doctor’s equipment providing real footages of North Korea. Whether out of fear or genuineness, watch the people’s unconditional praise and worship of Kim Jung Il as god.
The problem is, he is not at all worthy of the love the manifestly real God is.
