New Yorkers, Be Prepared To Pay Out Your Noses For Privilege To Drive On Empire State Streets And Highways.

The new license plates that have begun popping up on the streets of New York are a money raiser for the state, but that's not they only way the state is sticking it to motorists. There are higher fees for just about everything.

It may be no coincidence that the state's new license plates are called "Empire Gold" because the new plates -- with their higher fees -- will turn out to be a gold mine for the state.

New York's 9 million drivers are furious because in a rush to raise money -- and to make it seem like they weren't raising taxes -- the Legislature increased fees on just about everything having to do with driving.

A few weeks go I got a ticket from NY for blowing through one of their I-pass spots in January. I have not been in NY for 15 years, and my vehicle in question has never left the state of Indiana since I bought it.

A new form of revenue; browbeat non-NY citizens into paying bogus tickets.

Still waiting for my answer from NY. Want to bet it includes threat and intimidation.

Maybe you should give the Indiana Attorney General’s office an FYI.

Let's not forget how NY sent "agents" to NJ malls in order to document any NY license plates in the mall parking lots and sent letters to the owners stating in no certain terms that if they were buying products like clothing in NJ, that they were breaking the law by not paying NY sales taxes on those products!

At the time, there was a huge outcry against that policy.

If Indiana has an agreement with NY then you won't be able to renew your license or registration at renewal time. It's far from certain that there *is* an agreement given the distance between the two states.

This won’t hurt the poor, who, after all, cannot afford cars.

Chicago has been doing this for at least 40 years. I got one back then, having never been to that city, at the time.
