Turkish Group Sees Victory in Martyrdom - Willingness to Fight Set IHH Apart on Gaza Flotilla

The Islamic charity that was a key organizer of the Gaza-bound flotilla boarded by Israeli commandos earlier this week claimed martyrdom and victory Thursday, in scenes that appeared to set them apart from ordinary aid groups.

Members of Turkey's Humanitarian Relief Organization, or IHH, distinguished themselves from other activists involved in the aid mission by a willingness to fight.

"We do not even have a jackknife here, but we will not let Israeli soldiers on board this ship," IHH leader Bulent Yildirim told reporters via a live video stream before the convoy set sail from Cyprus.

The nine activists known to have been killed in the clash on board the IHH-owned Mavi Marmara were members of the group, Mr. Yildirim said, including a joint American-Turkish citizen, 19-year-old Furkan Dogan. ....

The fact that all the dead belonged to the IHH, and that the group's ship was the only one in the convoy that chose to fight rather than offer passive resistance, has further focused attention on whether the group's motives were simply to provide aid to resident of the blockaded Gaza Strip. ....

Mr. Dogan's father praised his son for dying in a just cause, the Associated Press reported.

Ahmet Dogan told the state-run Anatolia news agency he identified his son in the morgue, and that he had been shot through the forehead. Still, he said, the family wasn't sad because they believed Furkan Dogan had died with honor.

"I feel my son has been blessed with heaven," he said. "I am hoping to be a father worthy of my son."

And I feel blessed that his POS son can no longer breed.
