Suffice to say, midway through the series, the Earth Alliance is breaking down, with colonies breaking away from the central government. President Clarke has taken full control and dissolved the Senate, and instituted martial law. The military is split between loyalists to the Earth Constitution, elite forces loyal to Clarke, and neutral forces waiting for the political wing to solve their issues. Earth is now a dictatorship.
