Russia is reinstating a decommissioned nuclear power warship in response to growing concerns in Moscow about China's military. .

Japan’s Tokyo Shimbun reported May 25 that a senior Russian Navy Pacific Fleet official disclosed the effort to refurbish a decommissioned nuclear missile cruiser.

According to the report, Russia will redeploy the warship to its Pacific Fleet.

The objective is to counter China, which is advancing with military expansion efforts, the newspaper said, noting that the Admiral Lazarev, a 26,000-ton Kirov-class battle cruiser, was being rebuilt.

The cruiser is currently moored in the Russian coastal region of Strelok Bay.

“In order to maintain a power balance with China in the Far Eastern ocean area, it has become urgent that we reinstate nuclear ships that enable long range navigation and are equipped with advanced attack capabilities,” the Russian official was quoted as saying.

There is still a bit of that “angst” left over from the Sino-Soviet split.

I hope they replace the rusty safety valves in the reactor.

Maybe so. And maybe not quite so.

China is doing the same thing to Russia, that Mexico is doing to the United States. It is occupying territory. It’s citizens have been crossing into Eastern Russia. (I’m sure an attempt to stop it would be ‘racist’)

China is building it’s fleet, and what’s more it is setting up a global military infrastructure. At some point in time, Russia is going to have to wake up and smell the rotting stench of an alliance that will only serve one nation, not two.

I still believe there is much to be gained by trying to develop a working relationship with Russia. We saw the fall, acted happy for a while, and then forgot about Russia.

Russia has suffered a loss of prestige. We should have held summits. We should have given Putin a courtesy role if you will, in our international dealings.

Look, I know what you’re going to say, and I do realize there was a risk of Russia abusing the relationship. I think that’s why you keep your eyes open and don’t do stupid things. You don’t just walk away though.

I think Russia has far more in common with the West, and we should have driven that home. Favoring China economically to the degree we did, was just stupid IMO. Look at what we facilitated there, while basically ignoring Russia and it’s leader.

Mr. Rip van Winkle:

The Communists fell from power in the Soviet Union 20 years ago, and there is no more Soviet Union. Wake up.

Putin and Medvedev are both Christians, and the mayor of Moscow is Jewish. Your ignorance is astonishing.

I don’t think so China and Russia will be having issues on a grand scale in the not so distant future and Russia knows better than to blink. Weapons trade is rough between them now. Russia’s population is shrinking China’s is huge and growing. They like to stir the pot but they fear China more than us not on capability but motivations and history.

This also serves as a pretext for both sides to build up their fleets without alarming our military, which is both Russia’s and China’s primary target.

When projecting weakness, feign strength. When projecting strength and unity, feign weakness and disunity.

Russia is FAR more dangerous than you think. Russia is the main cause of our problems right now vis a vis Iran and North Korea. And, the reunification of the Greater Russia (USSR)is coming soon. Combine this with the alliance with China (and their alliance with the dictators of the world) and we are in for a world of hurt soon.

It has some interesting facts. Second only to aircraft carriers its about a size of a WWI battleship. The Kirov class battlecruisers of the Russian Navy are the largest and heaviest surface combatant warships (i.e., not an aircraft carrier, assault ship or submarine) currently in active operation in the world.Yes, they are nuclear powered.

Their nuke plant will get them up to a cruise speed in the low 20 knots. They also have fossil fueled plants (can’t recall whether steam or gas turbines) that provide the short term boost to get them past 30 knots.

Rusty Nuc saftey valve would be pretty primary. Having seen photos of their “fleet” rusting away, me thinks they’ll need a hellofa lot of paint to seal the rust-throughs. Probably got 20th generation barnacles too. All the leaks should keep the bilges clean.

Not to worry about rust though, they’ll be joining the Japanese fleet if push comes to shove.
