A lot have gone Galt. Contribute nothing to the current administration - no taxes and no talent, stress the system by taking from government any way possible(unemployment), get inside-work the census(?), be prepared and talk to those who might listen.
There’s a building boom in the Gulch.
You go back home and live with Mom and Dad or you find a girlfriend/boyfriend to live with who has a job or good welfare benefits.
It takes a lot of gumption to quit your job and go on the dole but after a generation or two your family will have it down pat. You’ll wonder why you didn’t do it sooner.
Some people can’t even manage that. Some end up starting their own businesses and find happiness without welfare and bosses.
Welfare is incentive not to work.
Yeah. I’m refurbing a mobile home to sell.
No one, and I mean no one, is hiring fifty-something engineers, not when they can hire an H-1B at half the price.
(Why are there so many H-1Bs? The industry has convinced congress that there are no Americans to fill the slots. I’m not saying any money greased the ways or nuthin’. Nope. Not me. No sirie)
Wouldn’t it be cool if our society went back to a less materialistic mentality.
That's up to each person to decide for themselves. I'm living a healthier, happier, less-stressful life than I was when I was working. I think I could say the same for the majority of the people that I know personally that aren't working.
I like sitting on the dock watching the sunset. I like to watch the birds at my birdfeeders and eating berries off my raspberry bushes. I enjoy the flowers and I like watching the hummingbirds messing around in my flower gardens. I like eating the peas and beans and asparagus and tomatoes and all the other stuff I get out of my vegetable garden. I like counting the shooting stars late at night, knowing I can stay up as late as I want doing it, because I don't have to go to work the next day. I get more enjoyment out of those things than going to work just so the government can collect the taxes to bail out car companies.
I retired 5-27-10 from the rat race because the rats were winning. I don’t miss the stress and tension one bit. I enjoy the slower pace and have begun to finally smell the roses. I am presently researching greenhouses, hydroponics, raised garden beds and aquaponics. Life is good.
Welcome to the category of people that are "not in the labor force".
Life IS good.
In some cases it's the loss of a second income in the home. With belt tightening, it may be possible to get by - at least for a while. When my job was eliminated 10 years ago, I opted to stay home with my kids. Now that college is looming, I would like to start a small business or find a suitable job to help get the boys through college. However, in the current environment, rather than actively look for work, I'm getting involved in our local GOP as a committeewoman. I believe I can do my family more good by pushing for change in government than I will by pounding the pavement for largely non-existent jobs. I still hope to start my business, but not in the uncertainty of this economic and political environment. I'm not among the statistics on the unemployed, but in fact, my job was lost to downsizing and I'd like to be bringing in some money for my family. There are a lot of us out there.
As time goes on, I suspect there will also be a lot more undocumented economic activity. People will react to these tax and regulatory changes by accepting under the table cash payments and turning to barter and other creative approaches. In my observation, when people think regulations are excessive or taxes unjust, they tend to work around them in ways large and small.
zero caused this economic crisis....he and his crooked Chicago mobsters let it happen and then made it worse....
what people may find is that if they simply lowered their life style just a bit they actually can live rather nice...having one person home all day to watch the kids or cook or shop or clean, and maybe it makes for a quieter, more peaceful homelife...
