Overtreated: More medical care isn't always better (preparing for rationing?)
Associated Press ^ | 06-06-2010 | LAURAN NEERGAARD

More medical care won't necessarily make you healthier — it may make you sicker. It's an idea that technology-loving Americans find hard to believe.

**********

It extends to often futile intensive care at the end of the life.

In between:

_Americans get the most medical radiation in the world, much of it from repeated CT scans. Too many scans increase the risk of cancer.

_Thousands who get stents for blocked heart arteries should have tried medication first.

_Doctors prescribe antibiotics tens of millions of times for viruses such as colds that the drugs can't help.

_As major health groups warn of the limitations of prostate cancer screening, even in middle age, one-third of men over 75 get routine PSA tests despite guidelines that say most are too old to benefit. Millions of women at low risk of cervical cancer get more frequent Pap smears than recommended; millions more have been screened even after losing the cervix to a hysterectomy.

_Back pain stands out as the No. 1 overtreated condition, from repeated MRI scans that can't pinpoint the trouble to spine surgery on people who could have gotten better without it. About one in five who gets that first back operation will wind up having another in the next decade.

The conditioning of the masses has begun. You don't NEED all that healthcare and those tests for cancer are really just HURTING you.

"It can start during birth, as some of the nation's increasing C-sections are triggered by controversial fetal monitors that signal a baby is in trouble when really everything's fine."

Now what former Presidential candidate sued the pants off of many doctors for NOT performing Csections?

Not one mention in this article about the doctors being sued for not running tests that could have found someone's illness. I supposed they need to be psychic to know exactly what test to run.

There is some truth in this article, but, if you need a stent, you’d better get one and THEN change your lifestyle.

And yes, it does sound dangerously like propaganda to prepare us for the health care bill.

The Pravda Media lies.

They’ve already pushed back recommendations for cancer testing for men (prostate) and women (breast) by 10 years for each.

The rationing has already begun.

The one with the gold will have all the medical help they need as well. They will have a yearly medical exam, blood drawn to check for cholesterol etc, mammograms, pap smears, etc... To me, this is all about telling the “masses” that they don’t really need medical care till they are really, really sick and then it won’t matter. An ounce of prevention... will be for those without socialized medicine. Everyone else, it will be the “culling of the herd”. Just my opinion.

Let'um keep their stinkin' gold, I'll get by w/good oldfashioned dirt cheap remedies (epsom salt, garlic, etc.).

Many excellent ways to treat illness & stay uber healthy fly well below "gold sucking radar", because they can't be patented and/or are dirt cheap.

One of the best doctors I had told me one time...”If you feel healthy, you don’t need a health exam every year.” I decide, today, if I want to take medication. I always ask my doctor what the alternatives are.

I own horses and the best thing you can do for them is to keep them off any medications and let their natural immune system control their body. Some times, they need a little help but in general, they do fine on their own. So will humans.

My doctor, today, and I have a good understanding. He talks to me and I talk to him. You need to take an active part in todays world. Just ask a lot of questions and you’ll be amazed at what you learn.

“Fear of malpractice lawsuits “has everything to do with it,” said Dr. Angela Gardner, president of the American College of Emergency Physicians, whose members face intense pressure to overtest in the life-and-death chaos of the ER.”

Most significant statement in the AP story.
