MOUNDSVILLE, W.Va. -- Seven people were injured early today in an explosion at a two-day-old gas well that had recently started drilling to the deep Marcellus shale formation in rural West Virginia.
All the injured were taken to the burn unit at West Penn Hospital in Pittsburgh for burns to their arms and legs.
Kathy Cosco, a spokeswoman for the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection, said initial reports indicate the drilling may have gotten into the Alexander Mine and hit a pocket of methane gas. She said the Alexander Mine is inactive and owned by Pittsburgh-based Consol Energy.
Thomas Hart, director of emergency services for Marshall County, said crews from 20 fire departments are on the scene in a remote area outside Moundsville as flames continue to shoot 50 feet into the air. Fire crews are keeping the flames from spreading to equipment on the drilling site, but they are waiting for experts to be sent from well owner Dallas-based Chief Oil & Gas of Wexford, Pa., for help with extinguishing the fire. The rigging was extensively damaged.

Seven people were injured early today in an explosion at a two-day-old gas well that had recently started drilling to the deep Marcellus shale formation in rural West Virginia. Hummm. After two days of drilling, they were not even close to the Marcellious shale layer but instead hit an abandoned mine full of methane.
That's different. I wonder if this could kick off a mine fire. Those suckers can be tough to extinguish.

North Texas Gas Well Explosion............ DALLAS - A gas well explosion in North Texas is sending enormous flames and plumes of smoke into the sky. WATCH LIVE VIDEO FROM THE SCENE The fire broke out at about 3 p.m. at 2101 County Road 1120 in Hood County. The blaze was so intense that it could be seen from at least 30 miles away. Additionally, Sky 4 helicopter pilot Mike Warner said he could feel the heat from nearly a mile away. The force of the blast and resulting burn also generated spinning spirals of smoke resembling funnel clouds, often called dust devils. Area residents report hearing a loud explosion or series of explosions. They also said they felt the earth rumble and their homes shake for several minutes.

Yes. You heard it here first.

You would think that a geological survey of the area and maps of the mine shafts would be consulted before drilling. The WV/PA area are full of old shafts that were never filled. Someone’s going to have to do more homework.

I imagine that these accidents happen every so often - but DON’T get the national news spotlight put on them. Of course with the BP spill, the News Guys all have their ears to the ground for any drilling/oil/gas/natural resource disaster.
Part of that is just the way news is.
A lot of it is also to push their liberal agenda.

The old mine maps are pretty poor. But yes, one would think they had to do some research before permits were given, etc.

Geees! You would think seismic exploration would have alerted them to the mine location! Unless they were just drilling blind.

The heat will do that. I’ve seen vids of volcanoes where they have created small twisters.
