'Pakistan has more nuclear warheads than India'

3 Jun 2010, 0931 hrs IST

Even as no stone is being left unturned to strengthen the Indo-US strategic ties in Washington - back home there is clear and present danger as our neighbour Pakistan gets a nuclear edge in the subcontinent. According to a report by a Swedish nuclear watchdog Pakistan's new nuclear reactors will increase weapon production 7-fold.

Already Pakistan has 60 nuclear warheads, and now with two new plutonium reactors nearing completion in Khusab, its weapons grade plutonium production will jump seven-fold, according to latest figures released by Swedish institute SIPRI.

The report says that Islamabad is developing an air launched cruise missile named Ra'ad. Ra'ad missile's current range is stated to be 350 kms. It is designed to attack fixed enemy installations at stand-off range, keeping the launching aircraft away from enemy air defence systems.

Pakistan's nuclear arsenal is stored in bases in Peshawar, Chaklala, Mianwali, Sargodha, Rafiqui and Masroor.

Pakistan had also carried out four tests of its land-launched sub-sonic cruise missile Babur. The report, however, is not clear whether these missiles would be developed to carry nuclear warheads.

The Swedish think-tank said that Pakistan's Khusab I reactor was giving the country 10 to 12 kgs of weapons grade plutonium. Islamabad had earmarked 32 US supplied F-16 fighters along with short-range Ghaznavi I and Shaheen I missiles as the delivery systems for its nuclear weapons.

The report also talks about Pakistan's other two potent missiles - medium range ballistic missile Ghauri I and Shaheen II, but says that they were still in development stage.

India need not worry one iota.

India will be at nuclear parity or better with Pakistan, as over time, their nukes dissappear.

[and re-appear with al-qaida, hezbollah, new rogue "states",...]

And in that region of the world, all it takes is a handful or two to utterly destroy the region....so what if Pakistan has more nukes than India....cease with the ‘my pecker is bigger than yours therefore I will buy a penis pump to make mine eventually bigger...’ crap and understand that a nuclear war between the two would be utterly castastrophic and devastating...with just a handful or two of nukes....idiots.

I must confess the scenario for an India-Pakistan nuclear war just makes no sense to me.

India has over a billion people. Let’s say in a horrific worst-case scenario the Pakistani first strike wipes out 300 million. Half an hour later the remaining 700 million will be coming over the hill to kick their @ss.

This article establishes only one thing, that India is just as prone to hysteria as Pakistan.

The article fails to mention that for all of its supposed nukes, Pakistan has never tested one....

That's right, they've never done a full scale test. Pakistan has imploded the hemispherical carriers, and tested it's fissile material for chain reaction and estimated yield. But no full scale test ever.

My hysterical speculation :):) : Pakistan has no effective delivery platform (yet) so it chose to build a series of miles-long tunnels along its border with India, most with railroad tracks. Pakistan has at least 8 nukes on railcars capable of moving up and down the border area. The purpose being to detonate them under an invading Indian army. A nuke shell game to stalemate India.

Self defense is all the Paks can come up with to justify spending inordinate amount of monies on a nuke weapon program. The Paks know that Indian radar and air defenses are formidable, India has aircraft carriers and Pakistan has a minimal air defense radar systems.

All of this is much ado about nothing. India and Pakistan are not going to attack each other beyond sniping and shelling at Siachen Gracier.

Alright, that’s just wrong.

Pakistan has at least a dozen missels (ballistic and cruise) that can carry their nukes. Including:

Hatf-I SRBM 100km range 500kg payload
Abdali SRBM 180km range 500kg payload
Ghaznavi SRBM 290km range 500kg payload
M-11 SRBM 300km range 500kg payload
Shaheen-I SRBM 650km range 850kg payload
Babur (Hatf 7) Cruise Missile 700 500kg payload
Ra’ad (Hatf 8) Air Launched Cruise Missile 350km range 500kg payload

Muslims with nukes translates into some regional apocalypses in the future.

Islam=insanity
Islam+nukes = nuclear insanity

Hey, you're right, great platforms. Why doesn't Pakistan ever test one?

Look at the range/payloads, what target in India is within 700 km. of the border that would be worth starting a war that Pakistan would lose hands down?

They’re developing two that range over 1,000km and should be ready this year. However Pak’s nukes aren’t as much for Indian cities as for Indian armies trying to cross the border.

Umm, you’re the first person to say that the Pakis don’t have any effective platform yet. They modified their F-16s way back in the late 80s while their missiles are mostly based on proven Chinese and North Korean systems.

Delhi is less than 500 km from Lahore, so you really don’t need an ICBM and even if India had the best AD systems in the world (which it does not), time to target to Mumbai or Delhi would be a fraction that of a North Korean or Iranian missile heading to the continental US.
