WASHINGTON President Barack Obama called the increasingly tense environment in the Mideast "unsustainable" Wednesday and said Israel needs a "better approach" in blockaded Gaza that would satisfy security and humanitarian needs.
Turning his attention to the troubled region as he welcomed Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas to the White House for talks, Obama also predicted "real progress" in coming months in U.S. efforts to nudge the Israelis and Palestinians toward direct peace talks.
The meeting came a little more than a week after Israel's deadly May 31 raid on a flotilla hoping to break the blockade. Nine men in the flotilla were killed, including eight Turks and a Turkish American.
Israel says its soldiers opened fire only after they were mobbed by pro-Palestinian activists. The activists and their supporters say Israel's commandos began shooting unnecessarily.

Right. It's always Israel that needs a "better approach".
Whew... America still has 2+ years left of this communist p.o.s. Ubama...
STFU, you Muslim poser...
Obama also plans to give $400 million to Gaza. (So they can build more fortified bunkers and launch pads)
Maybe Obama should appoint Helen Thomas as Middle East Czar.
Duh, it’s been “unsustainable” for 3000 years................
Got any ideas genius? Besides dumping a plane loads of American taxpayer’s cash on the strip?

Spoken like to true academic with no real solution.
Wonder if he will go and have dinner and leave Abbas to find his own, a la Netanyahu. I somehow doubt it.
vaudine
I’d have more faith in Obama as a broker if he was more even-handed. His bias is palpable.
Hey, little Lord Fauntleroy! MYOB!
He went on to say, "but the Cambridge police Israelis acted stupidly".
“The only thing really unsustainable is his administration”
I want to say it too.
Utter drivel. There ARE no shortages in Gaza... except perhaps, of rockets, tunnel building equipment and other charming items Israel wants to keep out of the hands of terrorists!
I believe that many Americans are waking up to the harsh reality that Israel is a democracy besieged by openly hostile neighbors that fully intend to kill or drive out every Jew in Israel...just because they're Jews. Then 're-claim' Israel, the tiny piece of sand that has been the Jewish homeland for decades. That doesn't sit well with decent, reasonable people, which is what most Americans are.
The usual U.S. demand that 'Israel must do more' and the phony posing of "Palestinians' as 'oppressed' and the decades-long lie that 'their' nation is being 'occupied' by Israelis is still used but fewer and fewer Americans buy it, these days.
Unfortunately, with global anti-antisemitism on the rise and a U.S. president that sides with the Muslims every time, Israel is being pushed into a hard-core defensive posture out of necessity, as the U.S. is weakening their support. The result could be a catastrophic nuclear war in the middle east but even without that horror, there will be war in that region and I don't expect the Obama administration will do much except declare our 'regret' and demand that Israel cave in to the Muslim loons that fully intend to destroy Israel and never tire of saying so.
Nothing has changed in over six decades. Trying to negotiate peace in the Middle East is a waste of time. If any leader on the terrorist side made a real attempt at peace, they would be ousted or murdered.
OK. How about this: Mass repatriation of the ficticious "Palestinians" back to their countries of origin: Lebanon, Syria, Egypt, and various Muslim zoos from the area.
Oh, and deportation of all treasonous Kenyans from the continental US. Almost forgot that one.

Obama, despite his foreign affaris paralysis, is right, it will probably end up in a shooting war in the next 12 to 15 months.
