Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa told the L.A. County Bicycle Coalition that a videotaped incident between LAPD officers and cyclists in Hollywood was "disturbing" and should be investigated.

The mayor shared his thoughts in a short letter to the coalition, which had asked him to comment on the video.

"I fully support LAPD Chief Charlie Beck’s efforts to improve the relationship between cyclists and police officers, and I was very disappointed to hear about the confrontation in Hollywood on May 28," the mayor said in the statement. "The video from that night is disturbing. The LAPD is conducting a full investigation of this incident, and I have complete confidence in Chief Beck’s commitment to making the city’s streets safe for everyone."

Four police officers involved in a clash with cyclists have been removed from field duty while investigators review the incident. The Los Angeles Police Department launched an internal investigation into the Friday night altercation after a videotape that appears to show an officer kicking the wheel of a passing bicyclist circulated across the Internet.

Don’t we have a quadrillion dollar deficit and went bankrupt already, Mayor Villar? What about DWP? Did you hear that they falsified their financial records and LIED to the City Council before they voted FOR more rate hikes? And he’s worried about bikes? WTF?

living in L.A., I’ve seen this bike swarms and they are complete a-holes. running red lights and riding on whatever part of the street that they want. cause cars to swerve and it’s very dangerous. they don’t obey the laws. screw them

Looks like pretty much cut and dry assault. The cop needs to be fired and do 6 months in the county jail.

Normally I don't condone police violence, but mass bicycle rides to intimidate citizens and deny their access to public streets for legitimate business while engaging in vandalism calls for extreme violence.

These bicyclists are properly defined as a rioting mob, and should be put down as such. Bust heads.

I didn’t watch the video, but I’m sure the cop was merely expressing the frustration we ALL feel as we watch bicyclists run stop signs and lights, knowing how they so desperately want to do everything cars do?? Bicyclists are hypocrites.

From a link at the article link:

Police launched an internal investigation into the Friday night episode after a video circulated that appeared to show an officer kicking at a passing bicyclist during a protest ride against BP's role in the Gulf of Mexico oil spill, said Cmdr. Andrew Smith.

Officers were at the intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Highland Avenue to ticket cyclists who failed to stop at red lights, he said.

Ok, I take back my previous post. Kick their asses.

Saw some Hmong kids swarm traffic in Fresno once. Very dangerous game. My father and I used to have a name for nitwits that run in front of cars “hood ornaments”

the frustration we ALL feel as we watch bicyclists run stop signs and lights,

It's MUCH worse than that.

I watched "Critical Mass" for years in SF, and it is simply insurrection.

Organized cyclists block EVERYONE (cars, pedestrians, handicapped) permanently with their bikes through dozens of traffic light cycles, refusing to move on the green, and running the red, knowing cars can't run the red.

Anyone who tries to maneuver around them to drive through a green is attacked, and the car is trashed.

I witnessed a woman with four toddlers in the car, having he car totaled and almost overturned for bumping a bike blocking a green, she was trying to maneuver around.

The mess these vandals leave alone makes them environmentally worthless.

Had I my way, cops would get a bonus based on the number of days those arrested remained unconscious.

Yes bicyclists need to obey traffic laws and should not hold up traffic by going slow. They should stay right. Officers should not kick them as they lawfully ride on by, though.
