What's wrong with America's right

Too much anger and too few ideas. America needs a better alternative to Barack Obama

HAPPY days are here again for the Republicans, or so you might think. Barack Obama’s popularity rating is sagging well below 50%. Passing health-care reform has done nothing to help him; most Americans believe he has wasted their money—and their view of how he is dealing with the economy is no less jaded. Although growth has returned, the latest jobs figures are dismal and house repossessions continue to rise. And now his perceived failure to get a grip on the oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico is hurting him; some critics call it his Hurricane Katrina; others recall Jimmy Carter’s long, enervating hostage crisis in Iran. Sixty per cent of Americans think the country is on the wrong track.

All 435 seats in the House are up for grabs in November. The polls portend heavy losses for the Democrats, who currently enjoy a 39-seat majority there. Quite possibly, they will lose control of it. The Republicans stand less chance of winning the Senate, where a third of the seats are contested this year, but they should win enough to make it almost impossible for the Democrats to break a filibuster there by picking off a Republican or two. The second two years of Mr Obama’s presidency look like being a lot tougher than the first.

Mr Obama deserves to be pegged back. This newspaper supported him in 2008 and backed his disappointing-but-necessary health-care plan. But he has done little to fix the deficit, shown a zeal for big government and all too often given the impression that capitalism is something unpleasant he found on the sole of his sneaker.

RNC should be so moved by the rescue efforts from fellow travelers across the Atlantic. Perhaps their all time favorite are Bush's.

I don’t know about Petraeus’s personal political leanings, but Bush folks are all over the place to draft him. If he is supported by them, whatever good quality the general has, it will be compromised. He would be turned into another NWO man, if he is not already.

I long clung to this once great “newspaper” as they like to call it. But they too became just another Obot promotional tool. Letting it expire last months after years and years, the supporters of Thatcher had become the supporters of any Global Warming theory to come down the pike, of any new socialist regulation anyone could conjure. For even they to turn on Obama now too after so much damage being done is telling, but of course, they, like the rest don’t understand that STOP - leave us alone is indeed a real platform for change. November or die.

For a long time, the Economist's dark secret has been that it's written by young graduates with no practical experience of the private sector. Who does that remind you of? Maybe someone whose only private sector experience is as editor of the Harvard Law Review?

That's why the paper is so susceptible to scams like AGW. I gave up on them in the days when they were outspoken proponents of Britain joining the Euro. (Rather tragic that Lawson - the scourge of "teenaged scribblers" - sided with the Economist against Mrs Thatcher.)

Before pillorying English observers as ignorant interlopers, it might be wise to take a look at how the Tories finally managed to return to power this last election.

I think their complaint is that there are precious few ideas coming out of current crop of Republicans on how to actually *DO* the things that they are campaigning on.

How will they shrink the federal government?

How will they shrink the deficit?
-
How will they ensure that the ‘too big to fail’ banks will not need to be bailed-out ever again (without nigh complete government control)?

At least the Republicans actually think these are problems that need to be fixed... as opposed to the Democrats, that don’t think they’re a problem at all.

So the “right” from a nation, in which a license is required to own a television set, is telling Americans how to oppose big government?

You know, the problem I see from this publication is not that the list of problems they listed, but the line of prescription they seem to be suggesting.

In a nutshell, it all boils down to preserving the status quo. High taxes, continued bailouts to shore up the economy, probably no action on illegal immigration. They have a good set-up but it leads to the wrong direction. So what does the lukewarm middle of the road accomplish when we face the crisis probably worse than Great Depression. Their prescription only works for fair weather days of yesterday. Not today and the future. If we are hung up on this myopic tactical approach, there will be drastically reduced GOP. Conservatism does not work for GOP, and not the other ways around.

Lately,Brits are freaking out about anything that might sink their economy which is on the verge of collapse. They are not in a position to act decisively. They are desperately holding onto hopeless status quo. For that, they will screaming in all four directions. They even screamed at S. Korea not to act too tough on N. Korea after Cheonan's sinking. I am sure they had a great sigh of relief after SK gov pretty much did what they screamed at. They are all scared to death about the collapse of their economy. It colors their judgment. It does not matter whether they are from Laborites or Tories. However, good old days of triangulation is gone. We cannot stray off the course due to self-styled conservatives in Europe whose country is about to collapse anyway probably at the same time or even sooner than U.S. one does. If that happens, no amount of centrism disguised as 'professional conservatism.'

This is where Brits are going with this. It is also the same with The Times even though it is good publication in many aspects. Their reading of the changing world is wrong. Their bag of tricks, tinkering and triangulation(probably including compassionate conservatism or thousand points of light) is no longer valid and way behind the time.
