NEW YORK (AP) -- About 1,000 New York City high school students chanted "This is what democracy looks like!" and waved homemade signs and banners Friday as they marched across the Brooklyn Bridge to protest a plan to eliminate their free transit passes.

Don’t feed the animals!
Maybe they could just stop going to school.
While I agree the MTA should be letting them ride, if Students want to impress me by Protesting...
Do it at 7 A.M.
On Saturday.
This is what an out-of-control entitlement culture looks like.
Parasites.
I don’t know about any other countries , but in Japan HS students don’t get free subway passes .
That’s the ticket, keep walking! lol
THAT is the essence of their warped sense of democracy.
Keep Walkin’
TNSTAAFL
Free ain’t it wonderful, the first thing I taught my grand son is the nothing is FREE.
Wow! Amazing how many doofus’ there are in school who have never taken a true economics class. They’ve been taught that “free rides” are their right.
the is that
Enough tax dollars are taken from their parents to cover transportation to and from school, this is just another union money grab.
The entitlement generation speaks again
That’s exactly what they are, parasites.
I used to walk to school...uphill...both ways.
I believe that it says right there in the Constitution that people are entitled to free bus rides along with free housing, education, food and cars.

I think we should get free ammo.
This is what expulsion looks like.
My grandparents walked five miles to school in the hills of West Virginia, rain, sleet, or snow (up hill both ways, ha-ha) and these pathetic fools are complaining about not getting free transportation to school?!
Here’s what personal responsibility and freedom of choice look like: “If you don’t like what the Nanny State is dishing out, stay home and educate yourself on your own dime!”
Were here, Were ENTITLED, Get used to it......
Sickening....
And we wonder why the Founding Fathers of the USA hated democracy. Here’s a good example.
Wouldn’t matter; they aren’t learning anything useful anyway.
How about free transit passes for 3.0 or greater GPAs? Or even, better, put X amount of hours in cleaning buses or busyard and earn a transit pass?
Not them. Their parents.
When I rode the bus it was $100 a month. I can't imagine paying that for three kids, especially when I know the tens of thousands of dollars I pay in taxes every year go to help pay the pensions of the union thugs behind the wheel.
Face it. If the bus system were priced to be self-sustaining, it wouldn't exist at all.
I understand I am sending a mixed message here. That's all one can do when the business model is this horrendous.
I like your idea, but of the tens of thousands of my tax money that has been spent on entitlements, paying for any kids to go to school doesn’t seem so outrageous to me.
One of the side effects of the ‘64 “civil rights” law was the municipal monopolies of bussing systems. Before that, it was more common for bus lines to be operated by private parties.
I’m sure it was an accident. (that’s sarcasm)
One more reason the ‘64 “civil rights” law is a piece of crap that SHOULD be repealed.
Nobody...even in Germany with their socialized education system...do they offer free transportation to kids.
...barefoot in the snow.
I thought that it was on The Statue of Liberty.
“”Give me your tired, your poor,
Your huddled masses yearning to RIDE free...”
“...barefoot in the snow.”
You had FEET?
The new definition of “democracy”: We vote to give ourselves stuff that other people earned through hard work...
That really doesn’t look like a ‘homemade sign’..
I smell astroturf...
...barefoot in the snow
and carrying my little brother on my back so that he could get the free lunch at school.
And along the way, we picked up railroad ties so that we could heat the house.
Buy your own metrocard, brat, instead of spending all your money on booze and Warcraft. This is what adulthood looks like.
They have to attend school by law. I don’t see why they should have to pay to go. Sounds a bit like forcing someone to buy insurance.

If you go to www.Saveoursubway.org, you end up at the ‘Working Families Party’.. From the website:
The Working Families Party (WFP) is New Yorks liveliest and most progressive political party. Formed by a grassroots coalition of community organizations, neighborhood activists, and labor unions, we came together build a society that works for all of us, not just the wealthy and well-connected.
We fight to hold politicians accountable on the issues working- and middle-class families care about, like good jobs, fair taxes, good schools, reliable public transportation, affordable housing, and universal healthcare.
I walked 2 miles to school in the snow,
I think they should repeat the demonstration... daily.
For about three years ought to do it.
Your point was valid prior to Obamacare, but in the brave new world of Obama, we will be forced to buy insurance. So it only makes sense that they should be forced to pay.
From those who have, to those who need.
Thank goodness we have a constitutional republic and not a democracy. I see they aren't teaching that in this school, though.
A couple people in that picture look a bit old to be in HS. Probably SEIU or ACORN joining in the fun.
They're right - that's what democracy looks like.
"Democracy" being an ancient Greek word describing, essentially, "mob rule".
And? That generalizes out to everyone? Some of these kids are traveling 20 miles to go to school. Were you aware of that? Some of the magnet schools are pulling kids across 2 and 3 boroughs. Should they have some freedom of choice if they can make these schools? Should we instead say tough, you want to do better but you’re stuck in your crap local school?
Oh. I too walked many times back and forth to high school about two miles away because the half fare got to be too much at times. Just so you understand you’re not unique.
Ha. well done. So i guess nobody on Freep will ever again say its not fair people will be forced to buy insurance.
