INDIANAPOLIS -- A woman who was jailed in Tippecanoe County is now in an Indianapolis hospital fighting for her life after a severe allergic reaction to drugs she was given there.
Lekeia Charity Brown, 24, remains in critical condition at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.
In an interview from her hospital bed, Brown told 6News' Tanya Spencer that she had a fever of 104 degrees and could barely breathe when she arrived at the emergency room.
Brown said that no one at the jail even took her temperature, despite her repeated calls for help.
"It was so bad already that I was burning from the inside out," she said. "I'm in excruciating pain."
Brown was lodged in the Tippecanoe County Jail on May 19 because she owed $2,000 in child support reimbursement. She said the jail's medical staff changed her anti-seizure medication and that she began having serious side effects and reported them to the nurse every day.
"He kept saying every single day, 'So, what are your side effects again? OK, well I put in something for the doctor, and they'll get it taken care of,'" Brown said. "Nothing still was ever taken care of."
Brown said that by the third week, her condition worsened to the point that she had to call for help in the middle of the night.
"I couldn't breathe. I was having trouble breathing," she said. "They gave me a slip and said to fill it out and they'd let the nurse know about it in the morning."
Brown said that the next morning, her eyes and mouth were swollen shut and that she was covered in blisters and gasping for air.
Brown was then rushed to a Lafayette hospital, which then transferred her to Methodist.
Doctors said Brown is suffering from Stevens-Johnson Syndrome.

What I see here is how our government run Obamacare will be when fully implemented.
People should and probably will lose their jobs over this, but it will be our tax dollars that will pay her million dollar jackpot she just won.
And they say we have no debtors' prisons....
I was going to say something similar but you nailed it on all points. This is what happens when we’re “cared for” by government.
If she owed money for child support, that tells me she abandoned her kids. I’m having a hard time feeling bad for someone who doesn’t support their kids.
If you want to get a good look at barrycare, look at how the public schools are ran. It’s not rare to hear of things like this happening in the public school system’s nurses. Before, you could see a private doctor, but that won’t happen anymore.
Re: Frenchman Dan-A woman is struggling for her life and all you’re concerned about are CS payments. Where is your compassion?
No, her husband could have divorced her and she was stuck paying child support she didn’t have the means to pay on a minimum wage job. I have seen people lose their drivers licenses when they fall behind on their child support, then they can’t keep a decent job because they can’t get to it putting them further behind. For her to be in jail over $2k means her ex must have really pushed the courts to get her there.

LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - Family members said Friday that Lekeia Brown has yet to be moved from her Methodist hospital room to the burn unit.
They said 24-year-old Lekeia Brown is not feeling better yet, and is still unable to open her eyes. Lekeia Brown is suffering from Stevens Johnson Syndrome. Brown said the condition began after her medication was switched during her time at the Tippecanoe County Jail.
“I kept complaining and complaining then by the fourth week this is what I looked like,” said Lekeia Brown.
Brown was serving time in the Tippecanoe County Jail for not paying child support, when she said her seizure medication was changed. Lekeia Brown said she felt an immediate reaction to the new medication and notified nurses. She said nurses ignored her complaints and Lekeia Brown asked her sister-in-law Alysha Banks to help.
“I said, ‘My sister-in-law is in severe pain and no one is looking at her and it’s bad.’ No one called me back and the next morning she was rushed to the hospital,” said Banks.
Banks said the family is devastated.
Tippecanoe County Sheriff Tracy Brown said he cannot comment on the treatment Lekeia Brown received because of privacy laws. He said the department is investigating the incident to make sure all policies, producers and protocols were followed. He explained his medical staff includes three full-time nurses and doctor services are provided by a contractor.
“They are evaluating on a constant basis, that patient’s condition and trying to make a determination as to, ‘Has this condition arisen to the level that we need to consult or get outside help,’” said Tracy Brown.
Tracy Brown said inmates are given a medical complaint card which can be collected twice a day. He said his staff is in constant communication with the medical staff about the information they receive.
Tracy Brown said they book close to 8,000 inmates a year. Many of those inmates deal with a range of medical issues from the common cold to cancer treatment. He said he is always notified when an inmate is transferred to the hospital.
The woman looks like this and they think that procedures and protocols were followed? No investigation is needed, he condition speaks for itself.

Sounds “UNFUN”!
Just curious - what was she in jail for?
Nevermind... just missed it.
“For her to be in jail over $2k means her ex must have really pushed the courts to get her there.”
I think this may be a different situation. Child suppport payments go to the custodial spouse but child support reimbursement indicates a government entity paid out welfare for the kids and then determined that she obtained child support from the agency under fraudulent means. I bet the reimbursement is owed to the government, not the spouse. Just speculation.
That’s why I use the tagline I do.
