I also read where he was the highest ranking general in U.S. history. To use the modern ranking system, he was the equivalent of a 6-star general. Though Pershing could've devised his own insignia he chose to retain that of a brigadier-general.
At some date after WWII, Congress passed an act elevated George Washington to a rank higher than Pershing to keep things in the proper persepective.
