More than 100 Uzbeks slaughtered as Kyrgyz mobs set the city of Osh on fire

More than 75,000 refugees were forced to flee Kyrgyzstan today as mobs burned villages and killed over 100 Uzbeks in the worst ethnic rioting in the Central Asian nation in 20 years.

Most of the refugees fleeing across the border into Uzbekistan were elderly people, women and children, and many had gunshot wounds, said the Uzbek Emergencies Ministry.

Fires set by rioters have destroyed most of Osh, the second-largest city in Kyrgyzstan, and food was scarce after widespread looting.

Triumphant crowds of Kyrgyz men have took control of Osh yesterday as the few Uzbeks still left in the city of 250,000 barricaded themselves in their neighborhoods. Fires continued to rage across Osh and shots were heard but police were nowhere to be seen.

The rioting has significant political overtones. Former President Kurmanbek Bakiyev was ousted in a bloody uprising in April and fled the country. Uzbeks have backed Kyrgyzstan's interim government, while many Kyrgyz in the south support the toppled president.

Interim President Roza Otunbayeva blamed Bakiyev's family for instigating the unrest, saying it aimed to derail a constitutional referendum on June 27 and elections scheduled for October.

A local official in the south said Bakiyev supporters had attacked both Kyrgyz and Uzbeks to ignite the rioting. From his self-imposed exile in Belarus, Bakiyev denied any role in the violence and blamed interim authorities for failing to protect the people.

The interim government has ordered troops to shoot rioters dead, but even that failed to stop the spiraling violence that has left more than 100 people dead and over 1,250 wounded since Thursday night.

Doctors say that toll is far too low because wounded minority Uzbeks are too afraid of being attacked again to go to hospitals.

Which side are the muslims?

Wikipedia says that "The population of Kyrgyzstan is 80% Muslim, 17% Russian Orthodox and 3% other." Uzbeks are probably 100% muslim.

The same Wikipedia article also says:

"The nation's largest ethnic group are the Kyrgyz, a Turkic people, who comprise 69% of the population (2007 estimate). Other ethnic groups include Russians (9.0%) concentrated in the north and Uzbeks (14.5%) living in the south. Small but noticeable minorities include Tatars (1.9%), Uyghurs (1.1%), Tajiks (1.1%), Kazakhs (0.7%), and Ukrainians (0.5%) and other smaller ethnic minorities (1.7%)."

South is where the riots are, and as I understand it has ethnic roots, not religious.

The Kosovoans are the Muslims. The Serbs are Christians. Oh wait, wrong war. That was the one where we helped the Muslims slaughter the Christians.

The Wikipedia article on Uzbekistan paints a very confused picture, saying e.g., "In Uzbekistan the end of Soviet power did not bring an upsurge of fundamentalism, as many had predicted, but rather a gradual reacquaintance with the precepts of the faith. However after 2000, there seems to be a rise of support in favour of the Islamists."

Well, the "riots" were in Krygyzstan, but I have to presume, until it is demonstrated otherwise, that these are an expression of Islamism. It's the only thing that makes any sense.

and then there's Manas air base and Vladmir Putin. I am reading that Uzbeks have backed the interim government, while many Kyrgyz in the south support the toppled president (who is, presumably, not a Russian puppet).

Thanks to Clinton. I am sure Obama will try to out do him. I wonder what and where his Christian slaughter will take place.
