Excellent piece. Steyn is one of the best writers in the business.
I remember a discussion with a German colleague. He resented Israelis for supposedly always trying to make Germans feel guilty about something that happened before they were born. What exactly do they “do” to make you feel guilty? Not clear.
He did say that Germans understood Americans, that we supported Israel because of Jewish control of our media. I explained to him that it was quite the opposite. In the US, jews mostly support the palestinians and its American evangelicals who support Israel. There are too few jewish voters to make any difference anyway, I said; if American politicians don’t dare come out against Israel its because of christian voters who would flush them out of office in a moment.
He didn’t really believe me. I get the impression that the religious climate in America has no parallel in Europe.
These euro-folk always crack me up. They go on about how intolerant and racist America is and theyn they throws stuff like that out there without a second thought. If you challenge them on it, they'll just look at you quizzically and say something to the effect that "this is different; it's not racist/anti-semitic because it's true!" You want to see a great example of european tolerance? Ask them if they'd let their daughter marry a gypsy. I've done it, it's fun to watch!
It is odd that the people most likely to support Israel in the US are those whom US Jews are most likely to hold at arms length - including Republicans.
And in that day will I make Jerusalem a burdensome stone for all people; And it shall come to pass in that day, that I will seek to destroy all the nations that come against Jerusalem.
I agree with a slight nuance. For years I have heard, He has a way with words or He is a good writer (not about me in particular, just in general.) and I think, What he really has is a way with thoughts.
Mark Steyn is a great thinker.
