Dog gone it - I was hoping to mention him first. Great photo. Plus - he’s better than ever today!

I love Nirvana’s work, but having Cobain on there is a joke. Being a great song writer doesn’t make up for the fact that he was an average at best player. I’m no guitarist, but my understanding is that he could barely play the opening to ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit,’ and he always fudged it live.

Love to see an example of what you are talking about. Speed doesn’t mean skill

I always post videos of Dave Murray when conversations about guitar players comes about.

Also, I think Chains of Misery to be one of his absolute best solos ever.

Skolnick (Testament, Savatage) blows King out of the water.

Chuck Schuldiner and Criss Oliva blew Kerry King out of the water. Plenty of the solos on the Edge of Thorns album had so much emotion, and they had such a fat, heavy tone as well.

What do you think of the new Rush tracks Caravan and BU2B? Some of their strongest work in 20 years.

How about this trio for the next G3?

Caravan is excellent; next year is a while to wait for a new Rush album.

Seriously, Prince? Prince??!

I didn't actually read the article, only the list, but I am left to assume flamboyance must have been part of the grade. I don't put much stock in a guitarist top 50 list that doesn't have Alex Lifeson in it. One would be hard pressed to find a better trio of musicians than Lifeson, Lee, and Peart.

Caravan by Rush, for your listening pleasure. Not bad for three old farts nearing 60!:

I’ve heard that before. Whoever has said it really hasn’t listened to him much.

Good list, but the order of them is debatable. I’m not a guitarist, just an avid listener, so my opinion does not matter.

Yes, I met Stephen, as I lived in Austin back in the 90s. He was a good guitarist and producer as well, one of which was a record that had SRV’s bad as the backing band.

Edge of Thorns is a great album. Gutter Ballet is still my favorite solo of Oliva’s.

players like Petrucci are technically flawless, but lack soul in their playing.

Like Malmsteen. Jason Becker was the exception to this. I think, had Becker not contracted ALS, he would be the best all around guitarist on the planet right now.

I haven’t seen Vernon Reid (Living Colour) mentioned anywhere on this list either. Alex Skolnick should be in the top 20 as well. Going from speed metal to jazz fusion and back demonstrates his versatility and talent.

Roy Clark could probably play a hairbrush.

Wow! It's good to see there are other people around here who know Rory (RIP). I still listen to 'Tattoo' (bought the record at college circa 1973) from time to time.

Saw Rory in concert serveral times in Europe. I was introduced to his music by a German girlfriend while I was stationed over there. It was about the time "Top Priority" came out.

I'm a big fan. Usually have either "Sinner & Saint", "Calling Card", or "the BBC Sessions" in the CD player. I never get tired of hearing that battered '61 Sunburst Strat.
