DERRY A pit bull was shot and killed after attacking a beagle on South Avenue.
Police responded to a call Sunday about 5:30 p.m., after an incident between the two dogs at 35 South Ave. Officers found the dead pit bull, which received two gunshot wounds, lying in the yard. The beagle suffered bites on its throat and neck.
The owner of the beagle told police he was tying his dog to his deck when the pit bull attacked from a nearby yard. Police said the pit bull's owner lives on Desmarais Avenue.
The beagle's owner said he was bitten by the pit bull when he tried to free his dog.
Police said the man then drew a handgun and fired a warning shot near the pit bull, which didn't stop the attack. The man then fired two more shots at the pit bull, killing the dog.
The man told police he had his handgun because the same pit bull had been aggressive toward both he and his dog in the past.
The pit bull owner was notified of the incident and came to get his dog. The beagle was taken to a veterinarian to be treated.
Police did not identify either dog owner. Derry police still are investigating the incident, and no charges have been filed. No one at the South Avenue apartment building could be reached for comment yesterday.
Except for the warning shot. Seriously, who fires a warning shot at an attacking dog?
ping
poor doogie.
I am told by pitbull owners that , It’s not the dogs fault.
It’s the owners.
Should I be faced with an attacking pitbull, my first round is into the pit bull’s handlers.
LOL :O)
Bump.
I am told by pitbull owners that , Its not the dogs fault.
Its the owners.
Perhaps that guy should have shot the owner then ... LOL ...
This is how such an event plays out in a free state.
Yeah... the way I figure it... is that for every pit bull attack -- there should be one dead pit bull ... I think that would go a long ways to solving the problem ...
I used to live in Derry, lo these many moons ago.
When we first moved up there, we brought our tom cat with us from back home. We moved into a duplex which had another couple living next door. That couple had a pit bull. I was warned to keep track of my cat because the dog was aggressive and had already killed other cats.
Lovely. Welcome to Derry.
I suggested that they keep their dog on a leash, and keep control of it, and we'd get along fine.
All in all, we did get along well enough. One day, though, the neighbor (I'll call him Jim) waltzes in our front door, along with the dog - no knock, no leash, no nothing!
My cat was right there in the living room. As the dog lunged at the cat, the cat hissed once, sliced off part of the dog's nose, chased the dog up the stairs and cornered the dog in one of our bedrooms. The cat stood guard in the doorway, daring the dog to come out for more, while the pit cowered in a corner. I had to lock the cat up in another room before Jim could rescue his dog and take him home.
Might have turned out differently outside, though this cat was a veteran so who knows. In any event, he clearly wasn't gonna take any crap from a dog, pit bull or otherwise, in his house!
I felt kind of bad for the dog. He obviously had never encountered a cat who was armed and dangerous...
Great story!
