Wishy-washy Obama missed an opportunity (Robert Reich pans Barky's speech)
Salon ^ | 6/16/2010 | Robert Reich

The man who electrified the nation with his speech at the Democratic National Convention of 2004 put it to sleep tonight. President Obama's address to the nation from the Oval Office was, to be frank, vapid. If you watched with the sound off you might have thought he was giving a lecture on the history of the Interstate Highway System. He didn't have to be angry but he had at least to show passion and conviction. It is, after all, the worst environmental crisis in the history of the nation.

With the sound on, his words hung in the air with all the force of a fundraiser for your local public access TV station. Everything seemed to be in the passive tense. He had authorized deepwater drilling because he "was assured" it was safe. But who assured him? How does he feel about being so brazenly misled? He said he wanted to "understand" why that was mistaken. Understand? He's the president of the United States and it was a major decision. Isn't he determined to find out how his advisors could have been so terribly wrong?

Tomorrow he's "informing" the president of BP of BP's financial obligations. "Informing" is what you do when you phone the newspaper to tell them it wasn't delivered today. Why not "directing" or "ordering?"

Barack “I’ve got a gift, Harry” Obama must have returned his gift for a refund.

Mrs. tractorman and I watched the whole speech.
It was his worst performance ever; who writes that crap?

Mrs. t even quipped that he looked like a black Alfred E. Newman.

When you lose Reich, it is downhill from here on in.

It's a shame that Barry's role models read him books that they liked

Instead of books that would have prepared their Manchurian Candidate for this moment.

Hey Barry.

How's it feel to be thrown under the bus.

Liberals like Reich aren’t dissatisfied with Obama because his policies are wrong, they’re unhappy with him because he hasn’t gone far-left radical enough to satisfy them.

Or is it something deeper? Whether it's Wall Street or health insurers or oil companies, we are approaching a turning point. The top executives of powerful corporations are pursuing profits in ways that menace the nation. We have not seen the likes not since the late nineteenth century when the "robber barons" of finance, oil, and the giant trusts ran roughshod over America.
Egad, I thought that was happening because of GWB?

Obama is Jimmy Carter and GWB?

When you lose Reich, it is downhill from here on in.

These are dark days for the man calling himself "Barack Obama" - but they are even darker days for the men behind the curtain.

Marxists and other "scientific socialists" believe that the course of events are dictated by "the Iron Laws of History".

Communists know that these "laws" need a little help from time to time.

Barry had better watch his back. Just think of all the mileage communists got out of blaming the JFK murder on "right-wing hate".

When Barry is no longer of use to the forces that created him, he will be gone - as they love to say, "by any means necessary".

But also because he's just incompetent!

Robert Reich doesn’t care if we don’t have any oil, and therefore gasoline, and therefore automobiles ... because he can’t reach the pedals anyhow.

He blamed his regulatory agency for letting the oil companies take the lead in the past but, in the present, he is also letting the oil companies take the lead. I'm not saying he shouldn't do that (due to expertise), but it's a two-faced way of doing business.

BTW - with Obama its blame...blame...blame...blame... others. Maybe he should change his name to "O'Blamer".

I didn't watch it but I read it. The first paragraph floored me. A speech about the gulf and he opens by saying his top priority is the recession. Unreal.

Hell, I could have written a better speech. I was amazed by how badly it was written. This is not a time for politics and policy. Totally inappropriate.

As a contrast, I watched Reagan's Challenger disaster speech. You want to see how a great leader handles a disaster when speaking to America, watch that speech. Not a perfect analog, but still an amazing contrast.
