Rome was destroyed by socialism. The wealth producers (farmers, merchants, knights etc) were taxed into the ground and virtually enslaved. Many of them regarded the final break up of the empire as a liberation.

So, yeah, what you said.

Was this how it happened to Rome?

I think that was UCLA Prof. Eugen Weber's theory. An ever increasing urban underclass required more bread and circuses which required more revenue be brought into Rome through extending the boundaries of the empire. Eventually, the cost of maintaining so vast an empire broke the system.
