American on US no-fly list stranded in Egypt
AP ^ | 06/16/2010

CAIRO — A Virginia man, stuck in Egypt for the last six weeks living in a cheap hotel and surviving on fast food, said Wednesday his name was placed on a U.S. no-fly list because of a trip to Yemen.

Yahya Wehelie, 26, who was born in Fairfax, Virginia, to Somali parents was returning with his brother Yusuf from 18 months studying in Yemen, when Egyptian authorities stopped him from boarding his flight to New York saying the FBI wanted to speak with him.

Wehelie said he was then told by FBI agents in Egypt that his name was on a no-fly list because of people he met in Yemen and he now cannot board a U.S. airline or enter American airspace. His passport was also canceled and new one issued only for travel to the United States, which expires on Sept. 12. He does not have Somali citizenship.

...

"It's amazing how the U.S. government can do something like this," he told The Associated Press from his ramshackle hotel in downtown Cairo.

"I'm cool with all their fighting terrorism and all that, I'm cool with that, I like that, more power to them," he said in American accented English, wearing baggy basketball shorts and a long white T-shirt.

"My home is America and I don't know why I can't go back there," he said, adding that he even suggested to the FBI to "put me in like ConAir or something ... in an airplane with a bunch of U.S. marshals or whatever, in handcuffs just get me back home."

American Man in Limbo on No-Fly List

By SCOTT SHANE

Published: June 15, 2010

SNIPPET: “WASHINGTON — As a 26-year-old Muslim American man who spent 18 months in Yemen before heading home to Virginia in early May, Yahya Wehelie caught the attention of the F.B.I. Agents stopped him while he was changing planes in Cairo, told him he was on the no-fly list and questioned him about his contacts with another American in Yemen, one accused of joining Al Qaeda and fatally shooting a hospital guard.”

“New Jersey jihadist arrested in Yemen worked at nuclear power plants”

SNIPPET: “The South Jersey man who Yemini officials are calling a terrorist with links to al-Qaeda previously worked at three local nuclear power plants.

Sharif Mobley, 26, is being held in a jail in Yemen after he allegedly killed a police guard and seriously injured another during a shootout at a hospital on Monday.

The Buena, N.J. native has also been accused of taking part in several acts of terrorism, Yemini officials say. He also purportedly has ties to the same branch of al-Qaeda who are suspected of attempting to blow up a U.S. airliner on its way to Detroit on Christmas.”

SNIPPET: “Former high school classmate Roman Castro says Mobley was always fiercely religious and tried to convert high school friends to Islam.

Castro says he ran into Mobley during an Army tour in Iraq around four years ago. The two had a short exchange, with Mobley telling him to “Get the hell away from me, you Muslim killer,” according to Castro.

A former neighbor said Mobley moved to Yemen two years ago to study Islam.”

I am heartened that authorities placed his guy on the no-fly list. That is just where belongs. Let him go Somalia and live with his grandparents.

Now what would one be studying in Yemen for 18 months? What are Yemeni schools noted for?

Oh, you know, the usual. Arabic, Koranic studies, bombmaking . . . .

I was hoping we had a ‘no sail’ list, too. As airlines choke off terrorist immigration, I don’t like the idea of them on boats - especially with ‘luggage’ the size of a back pack. Sail into a commercial center, detonate your back pack - all without hazarding the no-fly list.

For The Record - The IPT Blog

“Another American Tied to Al Qaeda in Yemen”

SNIPPET: “Sources say that Mobley had a relationship with Anwar Al-Awlaki, a former imam at the Dar al-Hijrah mosque in Falls Church, Va., who has been linked to a series of terror plots. Awlaki is considered an inspiration for Nidal Malik Hasan before the Fort Hood massacre and also is suspected of encouraging failed Christmas Day airline bomber Umar Abdulmutallab.

Mobley previously lived in Philadelphia and Newark, Delaware, where he occasionally worshipped at the mosque of the Islamic Society of Delaware. The Imam of the mosque, Abdel-Hadi Shehata, said Mobley moved to Yemen to learn Arabic and study Islam.”

“Al Qaeda link, a gun in hand
Jersey man held in Yemen”

By KITTY CAPARELLA
Philadelphia Daily News

SNIPPET: “In 2007, a West Philadelphia imam warned Sharif Mobley not to go to Yemen to study Arabic, but the South Jersey native and his wife, Zinga Bey, traveled there anyway.”

SNIPPET: “A law-enforcement source confirmed this week that Mobley is a U.S. citizen whom Yemen authorities identified as “the terrorist Sharif Mobayli” and who had been mistakenly called “a German citizen of Somali origin.”

SNIPPET: “Yemen’s Defense Ministry’s Web site has claimed that “Mobayli” was “an al Qaeda member involved in several terrorist attacks.””

SNIPPET: “According to sources, Mobley told friends that he had met Anwar al-Awlaki, the radical American-born imam of Yemen descent who had an e-mail exchange with U.S. Army doctor Nidal Malik Hasan before Hasan allegedly killed 12 soldiers at Fort Hood last November. Al-Awlaki also allegedly had preached to two 9/11 hijackers at a Washington-area mosque.

In Yemen, where al-Awlaki now lives, Mobley continued their relationship, the sources said.”

SNIPPET: “Inside Mobley’s computer was video of him teaching children in a 2004 weekend sports camp in the U.S. The camp’s leaders had a dispute with Mobley and asked him to leave “for his radical views,” according to sources.”

SNIPPET: “Joe Delmar, the nuclear spokesman for PSE&G, a New Jersey utility company, said Sharif Mobley worked as a laborer for several contractors at three New Jersey plants on Artificial Island in Lower Alloways Creek from 2002 to 2008, carrying supplies and doing maintenance work.

Delmar said he satisfied federal background checks as recently as 2008.”

Excuse me while I get another box of tissues. NOT!!!!!

First, if he really wants to return to the US, a boat trip will get him there as the FBI suggested to him. He seems to ignore that obvious solution, making his protests seem insincere at best.

But his whole story seems fabricated. Studying Info Tech in Yemen? On what, an old Radio Shack computer? Met with bad guys according to the FBI. He did not deny it in the article. His mamma says he was sent to Yemen to get some direction. What kind of direction can a boy get in such an uncivilized place? He claims he is stuck & broke in Egypt, yet his parents or in-laws could easily wire him some money.

This guy's story is BS. The FBI did the right thing on this one. Let him swim back to the US or rot in the Middle East with his new Somali wife.

Next time, try Rosetta Stone for Arabic, it’s a lot cheaper. And don’t turn to madrassas for “direction”.
