Topekans' right to openly carry a loaded gun was upheld tonight by the city council.
It was standing room only in the council chambers Tuesday night as more than 200 citizens gathered to voice their opinion on the open-carry gun law.
Gun enthusiasts said banning open-carry rights would be a violation of the second amendment.
While those wanting the ban claimed more guns on the streets is not a good idea.
But not just anyone can carry a gun in Topeka. State regulations restrict the following from the the open-carry:
* You cannot be a felon. * You cannot be mentally disabled. * You must be over 18. * You cannot carry in the premise of a k-12 school. * You cannot carry in any county courthouses.

Still a solidly red state that is too naive at times to realize it would be better to act like Texas than to emulate Colorado.
At least modern, hip, post-John Denver Colorado.
Kansas has this bad habit of electing Dem Governors so they can feel enlightened. Many of the Repubs here would be Dems elsewhere. The battle is usually between the “moderate” R’s and the right wing. Some of the right wing is a little underexposed to the big picture and tends to fixate on issues of little strategic importance.
Open carry is cool if thats your thing; its not mine unless we’re cruising for coyotes.
The other 3 council members were probably felons with mental illnesses so they could not carry anyway.
