If his father was Muslim, he’s Muslim by the laws of the religion.
He has said he’s a Christian, at least for campaign purposes, but he has never, to my knowledge, renounced any of the pillars of Islam.
A resourceful reporter could put this to bed very quickly by asking, “So, Mr. President, which of the pillars of Islam do you reject? That Mohammed was the last prophet of Allah?”
I took it as Obama saying McCain didn’t accuse him of being a muslim and George didn’t understand his point and corrected him. Remember how Obama just started at him for a minute like “what”? Obama then said “Christian faith” probably because George freaked him out. I could be wrong but that has always been my take. Obama isn’t so stupid to say he was a muslim in an interview. But I believe he is much more muslim than Christian. Between his stating that the call to prayers was the most beautiful sound on earth and stating his one of his books that if the political winds should shift, he would side with the muslims, doesn’t leave much doubt.

The whole "burka" thing really isn't so much Muslim as it is Arabic and Persian. The women in Indonesia, except for one province, which is under a version of Sharia law, don't cover up like that, not even a headscarf most of the time. When they do, it's not so much a covering as a decoration, and non Muslims in Indonesia wear similar headgear at times.
Indonesia, where Bammy spent some of his formative years, is the largest population Muslim country in the world. It's also where the Bali, which is in Indonesia, bombers came from.
