WARNING about grabbing and disposing of plastic bottles on the ground - BOTTLE BOMBS
http://www.snopes.com/crime/warnings/bottlebomb.asp ^
Posted on 06/17/2010 5:12:22 PM PDT by Iam1ru1-2
This dangerous and violent crime is on the increase:
Don't pick up any plastic bottles that may be lying in your yards or in the gutter, etc.
Pay attention to this.
1. a plastic bottle with a cap. 2. a little Drano. 3. a little water. 4. a small piece of foil. 5. Disturb it by moving it; and BOOM!! 6. No fingers left and other serious effects to your face, eyes, etc..
People are finding these bombs in mailboxes and in their yards, just waiting for you to pick it up intending to put it in the trash.
But, you'll never make it!!! It takes about 30 seconds to blow after you move the thing.

Oh sheesh! I often just grab a bottle or whatever trash is about as I mow— pitch it closer to the garage.
Thanks for the post!

I doubt that you have to shake or move to bottle to start the chemical reaction.
Sure to blow off some fingers this summer.
To: Iam1ru1-2
Can I get one real verifiable news story on this, especially one that resulted in lost fingers? Just one?

I’ll be sure to get out the AK and ventilate any bottles noted on the front lawn before disposing.

Wonderful, a warning AND a how-to at the same time.

Since I usually have a loaded revolver with me would it be OK to shoot and ask questions later?

I do the same when I walk the dog. I carry a plastic bag just to pick up trash I see.

Every year we get a few of these. Most of the time they aren't time delayed, instead the teenagers just shove the metal into the bottle, cap it, shove it in a mailbox and run. Pow! Then the news reports will will warn parents to watch out if their kids are putting together bottles, aluminum foil and some type of strong acid. Thanks guys, you just told kids how to make a bottle bomb.

OMG, Beavis and Butthead live. I can see it now, homeless, children who didn’t get school lunch and S-— pickers hardest hit. What a chicken little the sky is falling kind of BS. If you insist on picking up others trash, at least have the good sense to use proper precautions. Just think how much was made out of the danger to those poor roadside mowers who kept hitting discarded trucker urine. Yep, just stay afraid, it makes more room for the rest of us in the real world.

Some of those truckers are obviously very dehydrated.
To: Iam1ru1-2
They can’t blow up if you vent them, so take your .22 pistol along when you pick up trash.

3 liter soda bottle, a quarter cup of water, and a MRE heating packet.
(Bonus tip: To add chemical irritant, empty all the little bottles of
Tobasco into the bottle before the water and shake/mix thoroughly
before adding the heating element.)

We used to use pop-top water bottles in place of the soda bottle. You get a nice mist spray that way. But then again, we were engineers with too much time on our hands. ;)

This feels like one of those “WARNING” emails we all get all the time. The chances are one in a gazillion, but the harm done by telling thousands how to do some mischief out does the good that is done by the “warning”.

I’d be more apt to believe that the tree hugger democRATS are doing this. Only becuase they talk about saving the planet and us good folks on the right are the ones doing it by our actions.

Question...........
How does the one placing the bottle get the draino, water and tin foil in the container and then place it without setting the process in motion. Isn’t the moving/distrubing the bottle the cause that starts the reaction?

They do it VERY CAREFULLY!!
To: tacticalogic
Actually, since it will take 30 seconds to build enough pressure for it to explode the bottle, you could just unscrew the cap and all you’ll have is a minny Ole Faithful.
