Small Firms May Not Keep Current Health Plans After White House Decision

Although President Obama and many Democrats promised during the health care reform debate that “if you like your health plan, you can keep it,” the health insurance plans that are now offered by small businesses probably will not survive the transition to a regulated marketplace. The Obama administration acknowledged this on Monday, when it proposed regulations for determining what insurance plans can remain exempt from market reforms. And while participants in those plans will probably be grateful for it, business owners may be less sanguine about the outcome.

Because so many people were evidently reluctant to trade the comfort of their current coverage for the promise of better coverage, the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act enshrined Mr. Obama’s promise in an ambiguous “grandfather clause” for existing insurance plans. For example, plans that were in effect on the day the law was enacted, March 23, 2010, will not have to adhere to the rules that define the minimum benefits in an insurance policy or specify an employer’s minimum contribution to premiums. They will not have to offer preventive care. Perhaps most surprising, they will be able to charge different premiums to different people based on health factors.

This will result in untold millions of people losing their insurance coverage. If my employer cannot control his insurance costs, he will have to stop offering it. When I have to pay 100% of the cost of health insurance, I will be uninsured. There is no way I can afford to buy one of their cadillac plans on my own. I would have to stop paying my mortgage.

Well, we had to pass this law in order to find out what was in it. Guess someone finally read it.

Comforting.

Ain't that the truth? If the RNC had any sense, they would be buying ads playing and replaying the clip of Queen Nancy making that statement starting from Labor Day until the election.

We need to elect a congress which will defund this monstrosity until they get the votes needed to repeal it outright and override ObaMao's certain veto.

The point this blog is missing in the grandfathered plans is that even the grandfathered plans have to conform to mandated 85% loss ratio that goes into effect on Jan. 1.

All costs(other than claims)and any remaining profit must come out of the remaining 15% insurance companies make out of premiums. If a program is running at a lower loss ratio and they can't cut enough costs or raise the premiums enough for a decent profit margin....well that plan goes away, whether the employer wanted to keep it or not.

Trust me, they are going to have to revise their estimates after Jan. 1.

The Healthcare Bill also says that members of Congress must immediately drop their current coverage and join one of the exchanges in 2014. How many members of Congress do you think are currently in violation of this provision?

“If the RNC had any sense”

Therein lies the rub...The RNC clearly has NO sense. They have been inept at getting their message across on healthcare and many, many other issues.

“because so many people were evidently reluctant to trade the comfort of their current coverage for the promise of better coverage”

Is this article run as an opinion piece or as a “news” piece? My guess is a news piece, despite the 2 selections I have highlighted above.

I am a small business owner, and the more I hear about this healthcare bill the more it appears I will have to drop the healthcare we offer and pay the fine. I am also going to have to limit the number of employees we have on staff.

Which is exactly what they want. When enough people are forced off their plans, they will be forced onto a government run alternative individually.

What a surprise. The guy who lied about no tax increases, about bipartisanship, about supporting Israel, about being a moderate, also lied that we could keep our health plans? Who knew?

It’s like the back of the refrigerator. I see all these wires and the rest. All I need to know is, I open the door, the light goes on.
But when I opened the door, there it was: a severed horse head that stunk.

Exactly what the gov’t wants along with big corporate execs. They rather you work for a large corporation where you can be easily controlled versus being independent and earning your own income and not be subject to the petty rules, layoffs, forced to relocate, etc.

Cloward-Piven, crash the system, create mobs of desperate uninsured who will be in the streets clamoring for Single Payer. It’s exactly what they want.
